Summer Library Program

May 31-August 23, 2022

Dive into a good book at least 20 minutes a day this summer!

Daily reading is a great way to keep kids engaged and active during the summer, combat learning loss, and promote school readiness. It’s also a great opportunity to look at the Oceans of Possibilities that exist when we read!

How it works

Kids (age 0-19) who read at least 20 minutes a day can earn up to three free books and a chance to win a four-pack of tickets, one of four grand prizes from our 2022 Community Partners, or a Kindle Fire.

  • Log 20 days to earn 1st book + Community Partner ticket drawing entry at your branch
  • Log 40 days to earn 2nd book + Community Partner grand prize drawing entry
  • Log 60 days to earn 3rd book + Kindle Fire drawing entry

Tracking can be done online through the Beanstack Tracker app or on a printable log (PDF, 1.8B) or at any MCPL branch. (See “How do I register and keep track?” below for additional details.)

You may visit your branch to pick up prize books each time you log 20 days of reading in an online Beanstack account or on a log sheet. A log sheet must be presented each time.

See the prize and rules sections for complete information about prize drawing dates, and more.

Why should my child participate?

  1. Connecting children with the Library is a great habit to start early in life and will introduce them to “Oceans of Possibilities” that are available to them as they get older.
  2. Studies have shown that reading during the summer decreases the “summer slide” that occurs when students are out of school.
  3. The program establishes healthy reading habits that can be continued after the program.
  4. Families can participate together by visiting their branch to pick out books and reading together.
  5. It’s fun!

How do kids earn books and qualify for prizes?

Kids (age 0-19) who read at least 20 minutes a day can earn up to three free books and a chance to win a four-pack of tickets, one of four grand prizes from our 2022 Community Partners, or a Kindle Fire.

Also, each time you attend a program at the Library this summer, you can also count it towards your logging.

  • Log 20 days to earn 1st book + ticket drawing entry at your branch*
  • Log 40 days to earn 2nd book + grand prize drawing entry**
  • Log 60 days to earn 3rd book + Kindle Fire drawing entry***

All prize winners will receive a certificate for a free T-shirt from Big Frog Custom T-Shirts with locations in the Northland and Independence.

See the “How do I register and keep track?” section below for more information.

You may visit your branch to pick up prize books each time you log 20 days of reading in an online Beanstack account or on a printable log sheet (PDF 1.8MB). A log sheet must be presented each time.

* Drawings for Community Partner tickets will be held July 1, August 1, and at the end of the program after August 23. Four drawings will be held per branch. Participants who have read and logged at least 20 days of reading in Beanstack or turned in their tracking log at a branch two days prior to those dates will be included in all subsequent drawings.
** Four winners will be selected from all who qualify by August 23.
*** One winner will be selected per branch from all who qualify by August 23.

What are this year’s prizes for kids?

This year’s prizes include books, Community Partner four-packs of tickets, grand prizes from Science City, SEA LIFE Kansas City, Kansas City Zoo, and the Kansas City Royals, and Kindle Fires.

Participants who qualify for drawings of Community Partner grand prizes (40 days of logging) will receive:

Prizes can be picked up until the end of business on Sunday, September 4, 2022 (or Saturday, September 3, 2021, if your branch is closed on Sundays).

While branches receive a quantity of prize books of various titles to choose from, supplies are limited so please visit soon after a book is earned to ensure best selection.

Some prizes may be time sensitive so please plan to pick them up as soon as possible. Prizes must be picked up in person at branches.

See rules section for more information.

Can adults participate?

Adult Summer Library Program

Adults (20+) can participate either for their own pleasure or to model good reading habits for children and teens in their home!

Log at least 20 minutes of reading a day for 60 days between May 31 and August 23 to earn a commemorative Summer Library Program beach glass, plus a chance to win tickets from the Library’s Community Partners.

To qualify for prize drawings that will take place after August 23, adults must:

  • Complete 60 days of online logging in the Beanstack app or turning in a paper log by August 23, 2022
  • Live in the greater Kansas City area
  • Have an active email address or phone number
  • Pick up their prize in at branches

Can we read books we have at home or do we have to read Library books?

We encourage you to visit the Library to pick out books, but reading books you have at home count, as well.

Here are a few examples of other kinds of reading that count toward 20 minutes a day:

Will there be programs?

The Library has programs at branches to enrich a child’s summer learning experience, as well as virtual programs on its MCPL360 Facebook page and through Zoom that will complement the “Ocean of Possibilities” theme.

Because many Library programs include opportunities to use early literacy skills (talking, listening, singing, rhyming, reading, sharing, writing, creating, playing, imagining), attending a program can count toward the 20-minutes a day of reading.

How do I register and keep track?

Option 1: Register to access the easy-to-use Beanstack online tracking system. If this is your first year participating, you can register yourself and one or more children any time before May 31 under one username and password. Beginning May 31, you can start logging for everyone in your family. If you attend a Library program, you can count that toward 20 minutes of reading. (Note: Teachers and day care providers should only add members of their family to an account. Students are not eligible for prizes if they are under a teacher’s Beanstack account.)

Option 2: Download the free Beanstack Tracker app for convenient registration and logging. You may have to search for “Mid-Continent Public Library” in order to establish your account. Use the app daily to log for everyone who is participating.

Option 3: Print a paper log (PDF, 1.8MB) or pick one up at your local branch. Kids can color in the spaces for each day of reading. Every time you reach 20 days, visit your branch with your log sheets and pick up the books that have been earned.

If you use a paper log, you will qualify for the drawings for four-packs of Community Partner tickets if you bring it in to a branch and show that you have read for the first 20 days completed the amount required by June 29, July 30, or August 23. To qualify for the final drawing for tickets, grand prizes, Kindle Fires, and to receive final book prizes, you will need to return the log to your MCPL branch by August 23, 2022. Staff will register participants when the log is turned for the first time.

What happens if we miss a day or two of reading?

You don’t have to read for 20 consecutive days to earn a book prize or qualify for the Community Partner prizes. For example, you could read for 12 days straight, skip two days, and then read for the next eight days to get to the 20-day level.

Looking for activities to do at home, a daycare or preschool?

The Library has plenty of ways to support reading this summer for daycare and preschool settings and to support caregivers doing activities with children. Find resources to increase vocabulary, ideas for picture books, eBooks suitable for young learners, activity sheets, music, and more.

Rules and additional information

Participants ages 0-19 must meet the criteria below to earn books or qualify for the prize drawings which will be held at random.

  • Log 20 days to earn 1st book + Community Partner ticket drawing entry at your branch
  • Log 40 days to earn 2nd book + Community Partner grand prize drawing entry
  • Log 60 days to earn 3rd book + Kindle Fire drawing entry

To pick up prize books or qualify for drawing, participants must visit an MCPL branch and provide evidence of logging in an online Beanstack account or on physical Mid-Continent Public Library log sheets. Staff will create an online Beanstack account for all customers using a physical log sheet who wish to participate in Community Partner prize or Kindle drawings.

One drawing will be held per Community Partner at each branch for participants ages 0-19 who log at least 20 days of reading. Drawing dates for Community Partner ticket four-packs will be July 1, August 1, and after August 23. Participants who have read and logged at least 20 days of reading in the Beanstack app or turned in their tracking log at a branch two days prior to one of those dates will be included in all subsequent drawings. Prizes drawn on July 1 and August 1 that are not picked up within 7 days of being contacted by the Library will be offered to another qualifying winner.

One winner will be selected for each of the four Community Partner grand prizes from all participants ages 0-19 who log at least 40 days of reading during the program by August 23.

One winner will be selected at each branch from participants ages 0-19 who log at least 60 days of reading by August 23 to win a Kindle Fire.

Participants ages 0-19 may earn a maximum of three books each and one prize via all drawings.
MCPL employees and their immediate family members are eligible to earn and win prizes provided in a separate drawing, but are not eligible for Community Partner grand prizes.

To earn a Summer Library Program beach glass and qualify for prize drawings that take place after August 23, adults age 20+ must complete 60 days of online logging in Beanstack app or turn in a paper log by August 23, 2022.

All participants must live in the greater Kansas City area, have a valid email address or phone number, and must pick-up prizes earned by or drawn after August 23 by the end of business on Sunday, September 4, 2022 (or Saturday, September 3, 2022, if your branch is closed on Sundays).
