Keep the Fun Going!

Keep the Fun Going!

September 1, 2023

Summer may be over, but the fun is still happening at the Library! Perhaps you visited some cool places and had some unique experiences around Kansas City. Let me give you some suggestions on cool things to do at the Library after you’ve done them around town.

Did you visit the World War I Museum and Liberty Memorial to explore history? Midwest Genealogy Center can help find many different military records from World War I and other conflicts and wars. The Fold3 online resource houses more than 83,000 collections of World War I records alone. Midwest Genealogy Center also offers classes that focus on military research subjects. They’re full of great tips that will ensure that you get the most out of our resources.

Maybe you took a walk on the wild side at Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium or SEA LIFE Aquarium. Check out Marine Biology and multiple zoological explorations in ScienceFlix. Attend events like Missouri’s Wild Creepies, Operation Wildlife: Going Batty, Slither and Crawl, and children can even Read to a Pet. The KC Zoo & Aquarium also visits select branches to share how they care for their Animals through Animal Care Investigations. RSVP for these events as space is limited - it can definitely be a Zoo at the Library, too!

If you explored and discovered everything Science City in Union Station has to offer, come to the Library and explore the skies with Mad Science Presents Sun and Stars, Kid STEAM, Teen STEAM, Brixology Creatures, and Teen Coding: Hour of Code.

Perhaps your summer was full of art, rather than history or science. If you applauded a show, concert, ballet or opera at one of our many performing arts venues in Kansas City, be sure to check out Medici.TV for even more ballet and operatic performances. I encourage you to check out Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland ballet for a truly unique experience. Also, we have the wonderful StoneLion Puppets offering performances at select branches blending astrology with mythology in Starry Starry Night. See amazing feats of strength with the Eximious Mike’s feats of Brawn and Balance, and more.

If you’re still thinking about the art you saw at  The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, join us for art programs for all ages including Mad Science Presents Color Lab, Thomas Hart Benton: An Artist in Kansas City, Teens Create: Bad Art Night, Sumo Wrestling, Mt. Fuji and the Art of Origami, or Kids Create Art.

This is only the beginning. A complete list of classes, programs, and resources can be found online at mymcpl.org. You can also contact your local branch for more information. Just because summer is ending doesn’t mean the fun has to as well!
