No Due Date Reading for Young Adults

No Due Date Reading for Young Adults

March 9, 2023

I often hear this from local high school and college students—they love to read but worry about getting their items back to the library on time, fearing that their accrued fines will block their account.

Let me reassure you: fines only accrue five cents per day, up to a dollar per item, before we bill you for the item being assumed lost (after six weeks overdue). After it’s returned, the fine goes back down to a dollar. Let it be noted that we don’t block anyone’s account until the total of fees and fines reaches $30.

Secondly, the Library has a large selection of options for you if you want to read but don’t want to have to worry as much about due dates. Check out some of these options:

  • If you like reading local Indie authors or want to have your own story shared, check out BiblioBoard. It features thousands of books, audiobooks, and more from 450 publishers. They’re all digital books and cover a variety of topics and genres. There are no holds, no waiting times, and no checkout times; just read or listen right there and then. It’s that easy.

  • If you want to read the latest graphic novels, or have a class project about a specific book you may be reading but had to turn in your library’s copy, check out TeenBookCloud. There are over a thousand graphic novels, classic works of literature, and a huge array of audiobooks. There are no due dates, no downloading, and you get them right there at your fingertips.

  • While this last resource may have due dates, you don’t have to worry about them. Why? Because the books turn themselves in. That’s the power of Libby, by OverDrive! Featuring thousands of eBooks and downloadable audiobooks, and over 100 popular graphic novel titles that you can read right now, titles are categorized and easy to search for. Find your next read there. You can read it from a desktop, laptop, phone, or tablet. Don’t forget to download the free Libby app to your phone too. You can keep track of everything you read or listen to there as well.

There are additional eBook and eAudiobook resources that you can find here. How do you get started? Grab your Library card (or get signed up for one online or in person) and log onto mymcpl.org

It’s free, it’s easy, and there are almost no due dates to worry about. Make reading easy and your way!
