More Than a Month

In 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson set out with an idea to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history; he started the very first Negro History Week that year. What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied-or even documented-when this tradition originated. Although blacks had been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it wasn't until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books.

Something Smells Fishy

And by fishy I mean delicious and healthy!

Have you ever gone fishing with the warm, golden rising-sun at your back and your line in the water? Some of you may say yes, and some may say no. But here’s a tougher question for you, one I’m sure that everyone will say "no" to. Have you ever travelled to outer space?

If you say "yes" to that, please come to the branch. It would be awesome to meet you! Actually, everyone reading this come into the branch. Whether you’ve been to space or not, you’re all really cool people in my book.

Tax Season: From Paper Trail to E-File

Death and taxes are the two things you can always count on. However, we can’t always count on getting tax forms. 

Unfortunately, the IRS has not mailed forms in about two years. It happened so quietly that a lot of us didn’t notice—I certainly did not—and then we realized that it was time for taxes to be filed, and we still hadn’t received our forms in the mail. Why haven’t we gotten our forms in the mail you ask?

The current Parkville Branch opened in 1992. Before becoming the Parkville Branch, this library was the Platte Woods Branch. It originally opened in 1961. Last year, 197,591 patrons visited the library.
