The Blue Ridge Branch opened in 1991. Previous homes of the Blue Ridge Branch included an elementary and high school, and two shopping centers. Last year, over 207,000 patrons visited the branch.

Join us for Souper Storytime on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. where we focus on early reading skills for preschoolers. We also offer Craft Time, Game Night, and many other enrichment programs for children and families.

The Word Game

Do you ever get tired of using the same words when there are so many great words to choose from in the English language? Here’s a fun game that you can play with your kids, friends, other family members, and co-workers. Choose a word of the day, and see how many times you can work it into a conversation. It has to be used correctly though. The most popular online dictionary, dictionary.com, makes it easy by offering a word of the day along with the definition.

The Immortal Game

In the summer of 1851 in London, in the midst of the first international chess tournament, a chess game was played at a tavern not far from the tournament itself. This would eventually become one of the most famous chess games ever played. The two players were Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky, both taking a break from the tournament. Anderssen made bold, sacrificial moves, including sacrificing his bishop, two rooks, and his queen to secure a victory in 26 moves.

Are you a newbie to computers? If so, the Blue Ridge Branch offers a program to help you get familiar with technology. Join us as we learn the basics of Windows computing, basic email, and Internet skills in Basic Computer Skills, a program we offer every second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. This month will meet on June 11th at 7:00 p.m., so come on out.
