DNA Testing

DNA Testing

January 17, 2024

In the past ten years, DNA testing has exploded in popularity. So much so that people give and receive them as gifts. After taking my own DNA test, I gave my parents tests in the hope that it would help me with my research. With the results, I was able to connect to extended family, hear family stories, and see pictures that I had not seen before! The results are even helping me to chisel away at a brick wall that has stumped me for years!

Many people take DNA tests to learn where their family came from (ethnicity estimates) or to view traits and health information, but DNA testing can tell you so much more. It can connect you to other relatives who may provide the key to solving a family mystery. It may shed light on an elusive ancestor whose parentage is unknown. DNA testing has the potential to open many research doors!

Do you want to learn more about using your DNA tests effectively? Here at Midwest Genealogy Center, we have two brand new classes that are coming up. We will offer the classes as a two-part series, one week apart, on February 20 and 27. These classes, Introduction to Genetic Genealogy:  DNA Basics and Genetic Genealogy:  Strategies for Analysis, will equip you with the tools you need to get the most out of your DNA testing experience. The first class will discuss information about the types of DNA, giving you the tools you need to choose the right test for your research. The second class will build on the first class by going over ways to analyze and use your results. Since this is a two-part series, you will automatically be registered for all of the sessions listed. You can register for the classes with the links provided here or through our website under the “Events” tab.

These classes will dovetail nicely into our Spring Seminar on March 16, featuring Blaine Bettinger, aka “The Genetic Genealogist.” Use the knowledge that you gain from our classes to prepare you for a day of learning in-depth genetic genealogy research techniques! Registration is required. You can register for The Midwest Genealogy Center’s Spring Seminar: A Day With The Genetic Genealogist by clicking the link or through our website. The registration deadline is March 4. As always, if you have any questions, you can contact us at 816-252-7228 or stop by the Midwest Genealogy Center at 3440 S. Lee's Summit Rd. Independence, MO 64055.
