Annual Teen Ice Cream Social: A Place to Meet New Friends
With the newly decorated young adult area, the staff thought it would be fun to actually use this area for our teen programs. We had many teens show up to enjoy making (and eating) tasty ice cream treats and making new friends. We made banana splits and sundaes, giggling about the fun we had this summer. Many comments were made about how great the new teen area looks. Come check it out when you attend on of our upcoming teen programs this fall, including a game day on September 25th and pumpkin carving on October 26th.
With the decade of the eighties turning thirty in 2010, various eighties icons have published their memoirs. As they look back on their bad haircuts (i.e. mullets) and their bad fashions (i.e. leg warmers and Members Only jackets), you can, too.
The following is a sample of some of the eighties icons who have published their memoirs in 2010. All of the books are available at MCPL.
Several times a week, people come into the library looking for a Chilton’s manual to help them while they are working on their cars. There are so many different makes, models and years of cars, so it can be difficult to find the exact manual you need at the library when you need it. Luckily you are now able to access that information online, either at the library or from the convenience of your own home, instantly.
It was a fun day to come in and cool off at the library! Jo Ho, a professional storyteller, presented a delightful down under adventure of stories about koalas, kangaroos, and the billabong in Australian Adventure for children and adults today. We all enjoyed to cool air as Jo spun tales of Joey Kangaroo and the Hopping Mouse. We learned lots of terms like, "It's my shout, mate!" That's the Australian way of letting someone know they're in for a treat. Stop by the next time Jo Ho is performing. We would love to see you!
It's hot out there, and while most people know how to keep yourself cool, you may not know how to keep your four legged best friend cool. I'm talking of your dog of course. The most important thing to remember during the summer is to make sure you're not over doing exercise. Dogs all need exercise everyday all year long, but during the summer especially, you really need to pay attention to make sure they're keeping cool as well. Breeds that are the most sensitive to heat related health issues are the breeds with the "squashed-up" faces, or brachycephalic faces.
The Mid-Continent Public Library offers a variety of programs for the whole family. These programs are free or with a small cost for hands on materials. Moms, do you need to plan an outing for the children? Go to the library, pick up books, and take in a puppet show, juggler, or a clown. Teens are you bored? Check out the teen programs like Anime Movie Night. Those hot summer days don't have to be spent only at the pool.
Not too long ago, a staff discussion brought up the question "What was your favorite book when you were 12?" Our answers show our different personalities and how they were starting to emerge even at a young age.
I have always been a fan of British writers. There is something about reading books that take you to a different time and place. I am a bit of an Anglophile anyway, so anything involving the tiny island across the pond calls to me. I love Val McDermid, Peter Robinson, and especially P.D. James. Currently in her eighties, James has published over 20 books. Since 1962, she has been charming us with the Inspector Dalgliesh mysteries.
Over the years MCPL Raytown branch has had several crochet classes which generated interest in forming a monthly group of enthusiastic crocheters. None of us are experts—I’m still learning along with the others in the group.
Our once a month sessions are fun and non-competitive. Everyone works on their own projects at their own speed. Often, we work on projects as a group.
I promise to love you forever—every single day of forever.
Until your heart stops beating, Bella, I’ll be here fighting.
Can’t get enough of the Edward, Jacob, and Bella triangle? Ready to profess your alliance to Team Jacob or Team Edward for all eternity? Think you know more about the Twilight World than anyone? Well, we know just the place for you—Boardwalk Branch’s Twilight Saga Ball, an all-day event on Saturday, August 7th.
