MCPL's Research Databases are awesome! In addition to helping with "need to know" information, these sites offer interesting and fun information. One of my favorite sites is Global Road Warrior. Besides the information you would expect, like geography, government, economy, and climate, I can find out about their culture, holidays, and religion.
The Amazing Colors and Beautiful Backdrops of Afghanistan
Much has been said recently, about what people do and don't know regarding Afghanistan. Most of what I know about Afghanistan is the everyday knowledge the typical American knows. I know Afghanistan is the home of several different people groups, each with a proud history, trying to live together under challenging circumstances. If you are like me and are interested in learning more about this country so many people are fighting for, you may want to check out some of the books featured in the Grandview Branch's Diversity display this month.
There are some things that you learn and they just stick with you. You might never need to know them, but they remain unforgettable. When you want to find answers to questions, a library is usually a good place to start looking. Here are a few I went looking for, and some things that I already knew.
We at the library would like to send a shout out to our amazing Pages (those workers you see diligently putting away all the books checked out, used for reference questions, or just plain out of order). A few of our pages are off to do other things with their lives, either for the short-term or the long-term, and we appreciate everything they have done for us during their time here… as well as everything done by those we’re lucky enough to have staying!
The theme for August’s display is "Get Organized". It has been quite the success so far! Books have been checking out constantly, and we’re replacing them just as fast for your feasting eyes.
Stop by the library to browse the display and all other books and materials on organization. We have everything from the obvious home organization, to life organization, to organizing subjects such as living wills, weddings, and cover letters.
How can the Blue Ridge branch library help you “Get Organized” this summer?
In the style of Janet Evanovich, Marshal Karp has a series starring LAPD detectives, Mike Lomax and Terry Biggs. This suspenseful and hilarious series begins with Rabbit Factory - a man dressed as Rambo the Rabbit is slain in Familyland, a second class Disneyland.
Do You Really Have to Finish a Book You've Started?
In the past, I had always operated under the principle of finishing a book, even if it was horrible, simply because I had already started it. It seems like such an absurd concept now, but I’m sure it made some kind of moral sense to me at the time. Maybe, I felt some sort of responsibility, similar to that felt during my school days. An assignment was given and must be completed. I had assigned myself to read this dreadfully long and unengaging paperweight of a novel, and I was therefore committed to finishing it.
