Just in “Tine” for Opening!

Just in “Tine” for Opening!

August 24, 2022

In the movie Field of Dreams they said, “If you build it, they will come.” MCPL is completing construction of the Green Hills Library Center, and we are sticking not only the proverbial—but the actual—fork in it!

If you drive by our branch, you might soon notice a rather large fork sticking up out of the ground outside our front doors. “Tiney,” as the Green Hills staff calls the towering utensil, is not the biggest fork in the state, or even the country, but we estimate that it is in the top 10!

Large forks in the United States (that we are aware of) by size:

  • Creede, Colorado – 40 feet tall
  • Fairview, Oregon – 37 feet tall
  • Springfield, Missouri – 35 feet tall
  • Milan, New York – 24 feet tall
  • Kansas City, Missouri (Tiney) – 20 feet tall!

You might ask, “What does a fork have to do with a library?” Well, a lot! In our new Library building, you could:

  • Plan a trip to visit all the big forks in this country just by walking down the aisle of adult nonfiction with the call numbers beginning with 910.2.
  • Take a class with the staff from the MCPL Culinary Center (opening this fall), because sometimes you might use a fork for mixing or eating!
  • Find a snack in the coffee shop/café that you might just need to eat with a fork.
  • Find a cookbook in the nonfiction books (call numbers beginning with 640) to peruse while sitting in one of our comfy chairs.
  • If you have a young one, you could take them to the new play kitchen in our children’s area, where they are sure to find some utensils to cook with in the pretend kitchen.
  • Or you could check out some of Tiney’s favorite titles from the collection (I’m not sure if Tiney has actually read them all, but the titles are sure to poke your interest!): Tiney’s Library Favorites.

The Green Hills Library Center drive-thru will open for service on Wednesday, August 24, and the branch will open for full service in the coming weeks. So, come on by to pick up your holds and say hello to Tiney (and us!).
