Rainbow Reads for Pride Month

Celebrated in June, Pride Month stands as a testament to the ongoing progress and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. It serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles, triumphs, and continuous efforts toward equality and acceptance. 

On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in New York City, became the epicenter of a rebellion against systemic discrimination and police brutality targeting the LGBTQ+ community. The uprising, known as the Stonewall Riots, ignited a wave of activism and paved the way for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Pride Month was established to honor this pivotal moment in history and to commemorate the individuals who fought for their rights. It serves as a celebration of diversity, identity, and love, while also serving as a platform to raise awareness and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights worldwide.

Over the years, the LGBTQ+ community has flourished, welcoming people from various backgrounds, experiences, and identities. The growth in diversity within the community has been instrumental in fostering acceptance, challenging stereotypes, and dismantling prejudices. 

While it would be impossible to cover all identities and experiences of such a diverse community in a single blog post, MCPL has an array of Rainbow Reads for a variety of interests. The Library’s staff-created list of nonfiction Pride Month books is as diverse as the community itself and offers a great starting point for anyone who wants to learn more.
