It’s that fun time again! Tax season is upon us. In general, Federal tax returns are due around April 15 each year. Usually, W2s and other important tax documents start becoming available in mid to late January. While Mid-Continent Public Library no longer hosts the AARP tax assistance program, we’re still more than happy to connect you with resources in your community.
If you would like to continue using the AARP tax assistance program, you can search for available locations in Jackson, Clay, or Platte County. Their website also includes a chat function if you have questions. They also offer the option to connect with an IRS-certified tax coach to file online using this link.
Another option is MyFreeTaxes. This resource provides easy, free federal and state tax help for households with an adjusted gross income of $72,000/year or less, and it’s made available by United Way. You can call 866.698.9435 to learn more or set up an appointment.
Kansas City Metropolitan Tax Coalition: The IRS offers free basic tax return preparation to people who qualify through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). People who qualify include anyone who makes $64,000 or less per year, people with disabilities, people who are 60+ years of age, and people with limited English-speaking skills.
TaxSlayer offers tax software and products to e-file taxes online. Some options are free or low-cost, depending on your qualifications. Visit their website for more information.
Kansas City Tax Clinic / Low Income Tax Clinic: This service is intended to help anyone with a legal question when filing their tax returns. It is not for anyone who is filing for current tax years. It is a great tool for anyone going through a tax audit or filing a delinquent tax return. Law students from UMKC will meet and answer questions. Call 816.235.6201 to schedule an appointment.
To enlist professional help, you can search for tax preparation services through Reference Solutions. This resource will connect with local financial and tax experts. Legal Information and guidance can also be found by using Law Depot and Missouri Legal Forms.
While the AARP tax assistance program may no longer be available at Library branches, individuals can still visit their local branch to obtain free tax forms. Booklets may also be printed out for an additional fee.
