What artwork mediums can be exhibited?
The Story Center can currently provide space for wall hanging pieces only. We have exhibited oil portraits, quilted textiles, and documentary photographs; any type of medium that can be securely hung with the gallery track system and within provided wall space is welcome. Please view our Story Center Gallery Dimensions and Hardware Specifications for additional information and examples of past exhibits.

How does an artist get exhibited?
Individual artists must apply to exhibit their work through our Exhibition Submission form. Artists may be invited to exhibit their work at The Story Center after their work has been evaluated. If their proposal is selected, a Story Center team member will contact them for scheduling.
How is an Artist’s Exhibition Proposal evaluated?
We are looking for cohesive works of art that express narrative: personal or historical, linear or abstract. Whatever the medium, there should be a clear, uniform idea and intention to convey specific themes and narratives. Selection criteria for art exhibits follow the standards set in the library's collection development policy. Artists must submit for review at least 5 digital images of the narrative exhibit they plan to display. Only artwork conforming in style and content to submitted artwork will be displayed.
Are artists paid for the exhibition?
The Library will pay the artist a fee for their exhibition talk. This public program is an hour long and will take place in the exhibit area in the historic house. There is space for about 15-20 people.
How long will artworks be on loan?
Exhibits will run in three-month periods coinciding with library program scheduling. (Winter quarter: December - February. Summer quarter: June - August.) If an artist has a conflict, they will need to notify us in advance in writing with their application. Scheduling may be adjusted if proper notification is given.
What happens if there are complaints about the artwork?
Patrons may challenge art just as they would challenge any other material available in the library. Policy for challenges is explained in the Mid-Continent Public Library collection development policy. Patrons may fill out the Reconsideration Request form if they have objections to an exhibit.
What responsibility does the artist have to the library?
Prior to exhibiting, artists must sign the Display Release form. At the time of exhibition, artists must provide a list of titles of artwork, including descriptions and media. Artwork must be ready for exhibition with two-dimensional work having proper framing and hardware for hanging. Any work not conforming to these standards will not be exhibited. The Story Center cannot be held responsible for artwork that is not picked up by the designated date after exhibition. Artists must present either the artwork release form or some form of identification before the library will release any art.
What are the Story Center’s responsibilities?
The Story Center coordinates display and promotion for all exhibits and programs. The Story Center will provide wall labels for artwork and will help the artist install and remove the exhibit.
