Summer Library Program

Virtual Scavenger Hunt

Through Aug 24, 2021

Did you read today? Show Me!

This year, Mid-Continent Public Library’s Summer Library Program is focused on reading at least 20 minutes every day! Daily reading is a great way to keep kids engaged and active during the summer and to combat learning loss and promote school readiness.

To recognize Missouri’s Bicentennial in 2021, we want you to “Show Me” you read!

How it Works

Every reader (age 0-19) who reads for 20 minutes a day for 20 days will receive a free book and will be entered into a branch drawing to win a four-pack of tickets from one of the Library’s Community partners, including Science City, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, and the Kansas City Zoo!

Read another 20 days, and you’ll get a second free book and be entered to win a grand prize from one of the Library’s Community partners. And, if you can read 20 minutes per day for another 20 days (total of 60 days), you’ll get a third free book and you’ll be entered into a branch drawing for a Kindle Fire!

Read and Log at Least 20 Minutes A Day

Level 1: 20 Days = One book + one entry into branch drawing for four-pack of tickets from each Community Partner
Level 2: 40 Days = One book + one entry into a drawing for a Community Partner grand prize
Level 3: 60 Days = One book + one entry into a branch drawing for a Kindle Fire

Tracking can be done online through Beanstack, through the Beanstack Tracker app, or on a paper log available at any MCPL branch or by downloading here. Register today and start logging your reading time June 1.

Adult Summer Library Program

Show Me! 2021 Summer Library Program Pin

Register / Log In

Adults (20+) can participate either for their own pleasure or to model good reading habits for children and teens in their home!

If you read at least 20 minutes a day for 60 days between June 1 and August 24, you will earn a commemorative Summer Library Program enamel pin, plus a chance to win tickets from the Library’s Community Partners and Throwback Throwdown Concert tickets from KFKF.

Prize drawings will take place after the program and will be conducted from all adult participants who complete the reading requirements and meet the winner criteria (live in the greater Kansas City area and have an active email address or phone number). Prizes must be picked up in person at branches.

Online logging must be completed—or paper logs turned in—by August 24, 2021, to qualify for prizes.

2021 Summer Library Program Frequently Asked Questions

Why should my child participate?

Studies have shown that reading during the summer and engaging in creative exploration help decrease the “summer slide” that occurs when students are out of school. This year more than ever, keeping kids engaged and learning is important and participating is also fun!

How do kids earn points?

Summer Library Program will not be based on a points system this year. Instead, readers can log daily reading to earn books and the chance to win prizes.

Read and Log at Least 20 Minutes A Day

  • Level 1: 20 Days = One book + one entry into branch drawing for four-pack of tickets from each Community Partner
  • Level 2: 40 Days = One book + one entry into a drawing for a Community Partner grand prize
  • Level 3: 60 Days = One book + one entry into a branch drawing for a Kindle Fire

Can we read books we have at home or do we have to read Library books?

Reading any book counts, not just books checked out from MCPL. Of course, customers are encouraged to use the Library’s online catalog or visit a branch to find books, as well as use MCPL’s online resources such as OverDrive for Kids, TumbleBook Library, TeenBookCloud, BookFlix, FreedomFlix, TrueFlix. Listening to eAudiobooks, reading articles online, following recipes from cookbooks, and reading articles in newspapers also count toward reading time. The important thing is that you read!

How do I register my child?

Register online to access the easy-to-use tracking system. If this is your first year participating, you can register your children any time before June 1. You will be able to register multiple children under one username and password if you prefer.

Download the Beanstack Tracker app to your mobile device for convenient registration and logging. Again, adults can register themselves and multiple children under one username and password if preferred.

If you are using a paper log, you will need to return it to your MCPL branch by August 24, 2021, to be eligible to receive final book prizes as well as entries for Community Partner prizes and the drawing for Kindle Fires. Staff will register participants when the log is turned in.

Will there be programs?

The Library will continue to conduct virtual programs that will be available to view on its MCPL360 Facebook page and through Zoom. Many of the programs will complement the Missouri Bicentennial theme. Program attendance will not count toward a participant’s 20 minutes of daily reading, however, books read during MCPL Storytimes can be counted as reading.

Plus, programs provide enrichment and engagement opportunities for the whole family from the comfort of home.

When can we start logging?

Logging through Beanstack is June 1- August 24. You can pick up a paper log at MCPL branches beginning June 1.

What happens if we miss a day or two of reading?

You don’t have to read for 20 consecutive days to earn a prize. You could read for 12 days straight, skip two days, and then read for the next eight days to get to the 20-day level.

What are this year’s prizes?

This year’s prizes include books, Community Partner four-packs of tickets and grand prizes from Science City, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, and the Kansas City Zoo, and Kindle Fires.

Every reader (ages 0-19) can earn a free book for reading 20 minutes a day every 20 days for a total of up to three free books. Adults who read at least 20 minutes a day for 60 days between June 1 and August 24, you will earn a commemorative Summer Library Program enamel pin, plus a chance to win tickets from the Library’s Community Partners and Throwback Throwdown Concert tickets from KFKF.

Prizes can be picked up until the end of business on Sunday, September 5, 2021. If your branch is not open on Sundays, please pick up any prizes by the end of business on Saturday, September 4.

Prizes must be picked up in person at branches.
