Veterans Salute

My great-grandfather, Charles Curnow Ladner, did not live to see Armistice Day in 1918. As a soldier in the Australian army, he was missing on the battlefield and then reported as killed in action during World War I. Reading my great-grandmother’s letters brought tears to my eyes. She received a lot of conflicting information about her husband and held out hope for so long that he would return to her. I honor his memory by sharing his story.

Join us at the Midwest Genealogy Center on Saturday, September 22, for Mid-Continent Public Library’s annual Veterans Salute. This event pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of our veterans. It is free for the whole community with activities for the entire family (no registration required). This year, Veterans Salute honors the signing of the Armistice of 1918 that ended fighting during World War I.

The featured guest speaker is Dr. Matthew Naylor, PhD, President and CEO of the National World War I Museum and Memorial. Come see displays of military memorabilia, watch performers, enjoy fun family activities, and eat a free tailgate lunch provided by Hy-Vee (while supplies last). All attending veterans will receive a special commemorative pin in honor of their service during the Veteran Appreciation Pinning Ceremony.

Enjoy indoor and outdoor activities and events scheduled throughout the day between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
