Women's Fiction is mostly written by women and features female protagonists who confront both ordinary and extraordinary issues that matter in women's lives. Typically contemporary in setting, these character-driven stories emphasize the importance of relationships with family, friends, lovers, or colleagues. Storylines are sometimes issue-driven and thought-provoking, but sometimes can be lighter and humorous in approach.
The best-known subgenre is Chick Lit, though there is significant overlap between the Romance genre and Women's Fiction.
