Woodneath Press presents Heart of America: Kansas City-Inspired Short Stories

Heart of America Panels

June 10, 2025

Woodneath Press’ newest title, Heart of America, is available now! This collection consists of eight fiction short stories written by authors local to the Kansas City metropolitan area. The stories in this anthology are set throughout Kansas City, spanning from the 1950s to the present day, covering many genres, including historical fiction, romance, and science fiction. While their settings and genres differ, the stories collected are woven together by their exploration of the concept of home. Each story is unique yet reveals something about Kansas City’s local community; collectively, they show a mosaic of life in the Heart of America.

To celebrate the authors and the release of Heart of America, we held a launch party in the auditorium at Woodneath Library Center on April 22. The party included recognition of each of the included authors; each author shared some words or read an excerpt from their included story. Afterwards, there was time for mingling, refreshments, and the opportunity for attendees to purchase a book from Monstera’s Books and get it signed by the authors.

If you missed the launch, there are still opportunities to learn more about the collection and hear from our authors! To engage with the community on a deeper level, Woodneath Press will have three additional programs at MCPL branches to spotlight authors and discuss the publishing process/inspiration behind Heart of America. This is a great opportunity to support your local literary community and purchase a copy of the book!
