Romance is in the air, and that makes it all the more exciting that Romance GenreCon 2019 will be here before you know it! From August 1–3, 2019, Mid-Continent Public Library will host three days of romance. We will kick things off with our writing conference, followed by events dedicated to you: the readers. While the focus this year is on contemporary authors, we do have a couple of historical authors as well.
So what is so special about romance? Romance is everywhere―from ancient Greece to Shakespeare! Romance is the number one genre in the industry, raking in billions of dollars, but it’s also often misunderstood. People claim romance writing is formulaic, but many genres have formulas, including mysteries and thrillers. Romance is traditionally written by women for women, but it’s something men can enjoy as well! This genre speaks to different people on different levels, and readers often find themselves reflected in the characters. Those characters sometimes become as dear as friends.
According to Romance Writers of America (RWA), the library is the number one place people get their books (and discover new titles!), which is why Romance GenreCon at MCPL is the perfect place for you to celebrate the genre and meet nationally recognized authors. This year’s lineup is fantastic! Featured authors include:
- Alyssa Cole
- Jennifer Armentrout
- Tracy Brogan
- Farrah Rochon
- Damon Suede
- Cherry Adair
- Sierra Simone
- Cathy Maxwell
- Janna MacGregor
Deb Werksman from the publishing house Sourcebooks will be here too, offering classes for writers on how to work with publishers and the author-editor relationship. There will also be classes on the business side of writing.
Friday night will feature a welcome party and Lady KC Reading Salon, and on Saturday there will be lots of activities, including author panels, fun interactive workshops, and a book fair. This year, we have also added a chance for you to bid on dinner with an author, and all proceeds from that auction will go to The Story Center.
