Spring is just around the corner. It’s time to start dreaming about sunshine, fresh air, and getting your hands in the dirt. This season, Mid-Continent Public Library is offering a variety of garden and nature programs designed to help you prepare for a successful growing season while connecting with the natural world around you. Whether you’re planting your very first seeds or you’ve been tending a backyard garden for years, these upcoming programs offer something for every skill level.
If you’ve ever been shocked by the cost of buying plants for your home garden, our Seed Starting Workshop with the University of Missouri Extension is the perfect place to begin. This hands-on program will walk participants through the process of starting plants from seed at home, including how to transplant seedlings into larger containers and harden them off for outdoor planting. By learning these simple but essential techniques, you can grow your own flowers and vegetables for a fraction of the price and enjoy the satisfaction of nurturing your garden from the very beginning.
10 Vegetables to Grow in the Spring in Kansas City
Looking for guidance on what to plant this season? Join local gardener Myriam Totta for 10 Vegetables to Grow in the Spring in Kansas City. This program focuses on selecting the best vegetable varieties for our local climate and provides practical tips to help you cultivate a healthy and productive harvest. You’ll leave with the knowledge you need to make smart planting choices and enjoy fresh, homegrown produce all season long.
For those who enjoy slowing down and taking in the beauty of the outdoors, Nature Journaling offers a creative way to enhance your time in nature. Participants will learn how journaling can support mindfulness and overall well-being while documenting the plants, animals, and seasonal changes they observe. Weather permitting, we’ll head outside to practice journaling together. Basic drawing supplies will be available, but you’re welcome to bring your own journal or sketching materials.
Seed Starting and Garden Preparation and Plant Swap
Finally, our Seed Starting and Garden Preparation program will cover the essentials of selecting seeds, preparing your soil, and creating optimal growing conditions for a thriving garden. Once your garden begins to flourish, don’t miss our upcoming Plant Swap, where you can connect with fellow gardeners to trade pest-free houseplants, cuttings, succulents, and more. Bring your labeled plants to share, discover new favorites to take home, and help us grow a vibrant garden community right here at the Library.
No matter where you are in your gardening journey, these programs (and more) are designed to help you grow with confidence this season. From starting your first seeds to swapping plants with fellow enthusiasts, the Library is here to support your curiosity, creativity, and connection to the natural world.
