Did you know that most people give up on their New Year’s resolutions within the first week of the year?
Let’s change that!
This year, I have a resolution you simply can’t fail, no matter your age or circumstances: try something new!
Travel
Whether you’re planning a destination vacation, booking a cruise, or learning about amazing cultures from the comfort of your armchair, the Library has you covered. You’ll find a world of wonder to explore, from National Geographic to Rick Steves.
- Browse our collection for destination inspiration—whether you’re dreaming of Scotland, Disneyland, or anywhere in between. Check out the 914–917 section in Non-Fiction for travel guides.
- Explore CultureGrams in our Research and Learning databases for tips on your next adventure.
Need a passport?

Learn a New Language
Explore the Library’s extensive collection of foreign language books and audiobooks.
- If you’re a beginner, try MANGO Languages, an interactive platform where you can learn virtually any language at your own pace.
Go Fishing
In partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation, select branches offer fishing poles and tackle boxes for checkout. Get outdoors and go fish!
Publish a Book

Create Your Own Podcast

Fuel Your Inner Artist
Explore and create something special with the Library’s arts and music programs.
- Attend free events designed for both enrichment and entertainment. Patrons can register at mymcpl.org/events or contact their local branch.
- Looking for inspiration? Check out our Program Guide for a full list of offerings.
Want to dive deeper? Take a self-paced course on Universal Class! Learn skills like acrylic painting, candle making, floral arranging, knitting, drawing, soapmaking, sewing, scrapbooking, watercolor painting, or calligraphy. Courses include video lessons, communication with fellow students, and expert feedback.
Join a Book Group
Connect with others who share your love of reading. Nearly every MCPL Library offers book groups for adults, teens, children, and families. There are also virtual book groups that meet monthly.
- From mysteries to memoirs, science fiction to fantasy, and horror to graphic novels, there’s something for everyone.
- Talented Library staff curate groups tailored to all kinds of readers so you can discover new titles or revisit classics.
Dates, times, and locations vary—contact your branch for details.
This New Year’s resolution is easy to achieve. Just pick up your Library card, log in, and get started. You never know what new skills or interests you’ll discover.
Happy New Year—and happy exploring!
