Tonight, We’re Gonna Party Like It’s 1969

March 25, 2026

I have been a huge fan of The Beatles for most of my life, even though they disbanded before I was born. My favorite album? Easy. Abbey Road. Abbey Road was the last Beatles album to be recorded, and it was dropped in the year 1969. In March of that year, John Lennon and Yoko Ono also had their legendary Bed-In for Peace to protest the war in Vietnam.

Honestly, I had forgotten Bed-In took place in 1969. I then started thinking about the other historical events of 1969. Boy, that was quite a year! Can you believe all the following happened in 1969 alone?

Woodstock: The gathering of music lovers on a farm in New York is remembered to this day as the quintessential 60s moment.

Apollo 11: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first people to walk on the Moon using technology that looks downright prehistoric in our day and age.

The Manson Murders: Followers of Charles Manson murdered several people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate. Helter Skelter (The Beatles, again) was written on the wall.

The Stonewall Riots: Considered the official beginning of the LGBT rights movement in the U.S., the conflict that occurred at the Stonewall Inn launched the fight for equal rights. Forty-six years later Gay marriage was legalized in America.

The Brady Bunch Debuted: A Gen-X staple. For those of us who grew up as latch-key kids with divorced parents, this perfectly unrealistic blended family was comfort food.

Star Trek Signed Off: For a little while, that is. It is amazing to think that the original series was far from a ratings juggernaut considering how legendary it has become since. (Exactly, how many series have there been?)

The Internet was born: Using what was then referred to as Arpanet, UCLA and Stanford were able to connect their computers. Nobody could have imagined what that would lead to.

PBS was born too: Sesame Street, Nova, British TV shows. PBS has managed to stick around for 57 years. Hopefully, it will be able to survive its latest challenge.

Nixon Inaugurated: Nixon began his first term in 1969. Five years later, Watergate would bring him down.

Chappaquiddick: A Kennedy, a car crash, and a life lost. This is a scandal that people are still debating to this day.

Altamont: The harmony of Woodstock was not repeated when The Rolling Stones decided to use the Hells Angels for security at the Altamont Festival. From peace and love to chaos and murder.

Believe it or not, there is a lot more. If you want to learn about everything that happened in 1969 check out 100 Days by Harlan Lebo and 1969: The Year that Changed Everything by Rob Kirkpatrick.
