“Stop me if you’ve heard this one...”

When it comes to movies, I’d say my taste is varied and eclectic. But if you really want to know my favorite genre, there’s no pause to ponder—comedy wins hands down!

They say laughter is the best medicine, and there is an abundance of articles supporting this statement. Laughter has such benefits as easing tension and stress, releasing endorphins, and improving organ and muscle health. I can attest to the facial muscle support at least! My family’s “human turkey neck” curse has yet to snare me in its clutches.

That said, a theater friend recently (and dramatically!) stated, “Where has all the good humor gone?”

Well first, how do you define “good?”

The simple answer is: you can’t. Everything depends on our own personal taste. But I do understand where she’s coming from. You see, comedy at the box office has dwindled drastically over the past decade. ComScore data shows that comedies made up 25 percent of the overall box office in 2008, but by 2018, the number had dwindled to only 8 percent.

Realistically, comedy hasn’t gone anywhere, so much as it’s changed. It made its way into other genres and has moved from the box office into streaming originals. In the past, media was simply packaged as “comedy,” but now it’s all about digging a little deeper into mixed genres, exploring a little further and finding humor that suits our taste in this new age. An example of this would be the “dramedy” (a drama-comedy combo). MCPL has many comedies in its collection that fall at various points of this spectrum.

So, while “comedy” may not look the same as before, it still offers all the great benefits that a good laugh can provide! What's your favorite comedy? Give us your suggestions in the comments below!
