Silver Surfers Meet Smart Assistants

Silver Surfers Meet Smart Assistants

November 24, 2025

Libraries play a key role in introducing seniors to new technology that boosts independence and confidence. This is especially true as artificial intelligence grows more ubiquitous.

AI is bringing helpful innovation to older adults, especially those experiencing memory loss or cognitive changes. Things like voice-controlled assistants, reminder apps, AI companions, and cognitive games can genuinely help seniors stay organized, feel connected, and remain independent longer. But for many older adults, and even their caregivers, the idea of using AI can feel overwhelming. That’s where libraries can help!

Librarians have long served as trusted guides through new technologies, and AI is no exception. We are uniquely positioned to act as navigators, educators, and advocates, ensuring seniors and caregivers don’t just hear about promising new tools but can adapt to using them comfortably and safely. If you need to start with basic computer use, a good primer is the book Computers for Seniors for Dummies by Faithe Wempen.

With new AI tech popping up daily, it’s no wonder families feel a little lost. There are medication reminder apps, chatty companion bots, and a whole parade of gadgets promising to make life easier, but figuring out which ones are safe, trustworthy, and senior-friendly can feel overwhelming! Some of the amazing new AI-powered apps geared towards seniors like RememberAI, Elderberry Companion, and SeniorTalk are built for simplicity, conversation and memory support. Our Consumer Reports database has articles about using AI Chatbots like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Meta AI, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity AI, which can be accessed with an MCPL library card. Mid-Continent Public Library also offers many technology programs of help to seniors. Check out the current offerings in our catalog.

At MCPL we hope to bridge the gap between interest and efficacy. Branch librarians can work with customers one-on-one with help using a new device and can print out how-to resources for them to take home. We can sort through the chaos, highlight tools that respect privacy, and gently steer folks away from anything suspicious. Sometimes a quick chat at the reference desk is all it takes to replace hours of head-scratching. We understand that not all seniors have smartphones, reliable Wi-Fi, or money for subscription apps. Our offerings ensure that AI tools aren’t only available to those who can afford the latest tech. For access to the internet at home, check out one of our Wi-Fi to Go devices!

The library is so much more than a place to read, it’s a welcoming space where seniors and caregivers can explore new technology freely. With patient guidance and clear explanations, librarians help AI feel like a helpful part of daily life instead of a confusing mystery. And as AI keeps evolving, that human touch librarians offer is something no app can replace. Our support ensures every older adult, regardless of their experience or ability, gets a real chance to benefit from these empowering new tools.
