While Mid-Continent Public Library has yet to resume all its in-branch services, it is offering a variety of virtual programs, including storytimes, family events, and business seminars. MCPL’s Story Center is using its online events to showcase authors and give opportunities for writers to hone their craft. The Midwest Genealogy Center is also getting in on the virtual program trend and offering events through Zoom! With summer heat coming our way, staying inside and watching interesting and educational programs sounds like the way to go!
MGC will have its Brick Wall Discussion Group in July and August through Zoom, as well as its very popular German Research Discussion Group in mid-July. Genealogists, both novice and expert, can get together with others to share helpful information, network, and gather inspiration to help continue their work. Registration is required to access Zoom events. Register online or by calling MGC at 816.252.7228.
For those genealogists wanting more, we also have some of our basic classes online as well. Under Online Learning, there are six classes and an online tour of MGC. We also have MGC's Weekly Website Wonders, which offers six different hidden gems on our website. Our website is a great resource for those researching their genealogy and offers access to census and vital records, newspaper articles, and more.
You can also access the Genealogy Quick Look on the MGC webpage. This provides an index to a portion of resources available through MGC as well as inactive pension claims from the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board. Search the index by name and/or date. If you locate a resource, you will have an opportunity to request it from the source organization.
While MGC is still not fully open to customers, we hope that our virtual resources and classes are helpful in the meantime!
