MCPL to Help Residents During 2020 Census

census

December 30, 2019

By April 1, 2020, all homes in America should receive a mailed invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. Once the invitation arrives, residents can respond on behalf of their households to the invitation online or by phone or mail. Starting in May 2020, the Census Bureau will begin following up with households that have not responded to the invitation either by contacting them in person or through mailed reminders.

Why Is the Census Important?

The U.S. Census is a count of everyone living in a community, which includes information on members’ age, race, sex, and other factors. The census is important because the final counts impact state representation in Congress as well as funding for public projects like hospitals, fire departments, roads, schools, and more. The census also supports the local economy by providing valuable information for businesses that they can use to make decisions on where to build locations, which types of products and services they should offer, and more. How Can MCPL Help?

Public libraries like Mid-Continent Public Library can be a resource for citizens who wish to learn more about the census or have questions on the process. Customers are encouraged to use the Wi-Fi and public computers at MCPL branches to respond to their census invitations online.

In addition, MCPL staff members are prepared to answer questions about the census and provide safety tips to customers, helping them avoid census fraud and scams. Staff can also direct customers to resources, including the Census Questionnaire Assistance phone lines, which can be used (beginning March 9, 2020) to address any questions they have about filling out specific sections of the census.
