Lock-In 2025: X Marks the Spot

Lock-In 2025: X Marks the Spot

October 2, 2025

As a child, I recall thinking that being locked in one of my favorite stores (think FAO Schwartz) would be the best time! Fast forward a few years later–ok, several years later–and imagine what my store or place of choice might be. If you guessed library, you’re right! It’s that time of year again, where The Midwest Genealogy Center hosts its Fall Lock-In. Join us on Friday, October 24th for this year’s theme: X Marks the Spot, where maps, migration and memory intersect! This year’s keynote speaker, genealogist Michelle Spencer, will headline with the session: “Using Maps to Fill in the Gaps in Your Family Story.” Learn how cartographic clues can unlock hidden chapters in your ancestry. Whether you're a seasoned sleuth or just starting your family history journey, this after-hours event offers expert insights, hands-on learning, and plenty of time to explore MGC’s world-class resources. For more information about Michelle Spencer, please visit her website at romamarygrace.com.

No, we can’t legally lock anyone in the building–health and safety reasons, I’m told. But by signing up for the event you will receive special access to the building after our regular closing time of 8pm, the option to attend special breakout sessions such as Researching in a One-Horse Town; Finding the Sweet Tea in Your Family Records: Southern Research; Finding Your English and Welsh Ancestors; and Unlocking Family History Through Church Records, an extra 3 hours of researching in the stacks, or a combination of all of the above. Tickets are $15 and include a light dinner.
