Do you remember where you were on June 1, 2008? I know some of you are racking your brains trying to figure out what important event happened on that date, but you won’t find it in any history books. Around here, we are excited about that date because it was the grand opening of the Midwest Genealogy Center. The genealogy branch of Mid-Continent Public Library has been around for much longer, but 10 years ago, we got our own building. At the time, I was not an employee, but I was here doing a presentation as part of the grand opening celebration. As a longtime genealogist, I was impressed by the new building and all the resources offered by the library. I loved it so much that a couple of years later, I came to work here. Now I get to participate as an employee in the 10th Anniversary Celebration!
Whether you have been a regular customer since the day we opened, or have never set foot in our building, we hope you will join us at the Midwest Genealogy Center as we celebrate 10 years in our current location on Friday, June 1, 2018, from noon to 8:00 p.m. From noon to 6:00 p.m., you will be able to digitize your photos and/or documents (up to 8.5" x 11"). Bring a flash drive, and you can have up to 10 items per person digitized by the experienced staff of Scangaroo. Visit Eventbrite.com and search for “Photograph Digitization Day” to register for a 15-minute appointment time. Walk-ins will be accepted if time permits.
Visit with the staff from Mid-Continent Public Library’s Story Center and the National Storytelling Network, and they’ll share how you can compile your digitized items (and include memories and stories) into a format that you can share among family and friends. From 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., enjoy refreshments and reminisce about the history of MGC. Listen to live acoustic music performed by the Frosty Morn Trio.
I tried to think of some fascinating statistics to share with you in this blog but realized that we do so much here that it would probably be too long of a list! There are always new books, resources, programs, and so much more, so I figured I would let you share your favorite memories. What is your favorite memory during the last 10 years? Come and share it with us as we celebrate our 10th anniversary!
Midwest Genealogy Center
I am so grateful to MCPL and the staff who allowed Michael Humphrey to teach a creative writing class that I had the honor and privilege to attend for about 8 weeks. His exceptional skill and experience made writing so much more than putting words on paper. It was a discovery of the process of writing and all the different levels that are involved! He made us all feel like artists as we added a new dimension to our stories each week! Never dreamed that I could say I have a published story but I do now - in the Midwest Genealogy Center of all places!! Thank You for all do to help people like me "Embrace My Troubles". (The title of my story). :-) Another side benefit were the people that I had the pleasure of meeting in that class as well! I'd venture to say that the patrons who you meet at this library are so really outstanding people! And it's always been a pleasure to come here! Thank You for 10 years of faithful service! Looking forward to another writing class someday! :-)
