My kids don’t have fond memories of trips to the genealogy library when they were young. They tried to figure out what they could do to have fun while I looked at rolls of microfilm in a dark room; and although we were never kicked out of a library, it wasn’t usually a fun experience for any of us. If they got a treat when we were done, at least it wasn’t a total loss.
Learning about your family history should be an enjoyable family event. If you want a way to get your whole family excited about genealogy, the Midwest Genealogy Center has a fun family event planned. Join us for Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 19, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. You can try your hand at some games your ancestors played. You can make all kinds of crafts including designing your own family crest, coloring a family tree, or creating a family chain.
In the computer lab at 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., there will be a class just for kids (ages 10 and up), so they can learn how to get started on their own genealogy. We did figure out a way to make spending some time in a microfilm room a little more exciting too. You can read the headlines from a newspaper on the day you were born, print out something you find, and take it home to put in your scrapbook!
A great way to remember your fun day at MGC is to stop by and have your “family portrait” drawn by a professional caricature artist. We even have treats! Stop by our customer lounge at 3:00 p.m. for some ice cream.
Moms, dads, kids, and grandparents—create some family memories together. Genealogy can be all fun and games! Register for Family Fun Day today.
