Inclusive Programs at the Library

The Library is for everyone! That includes creating programs where children with different sensory, developmental, and learning needs can feel comfortable, welcomed and supported.

While many Library programs are designed for a wide range of ages and abilities, specialized programs offer an environment intentionally designed around specific needs. From softer music and low lighting to sensory-friendly activities and smaller, more predictable experiences, these programs can help reduce barriers and give children more opportunities to participate.

Here are some of our upcoming programs designed with inclusion in mind:

Sensory-Friendly Playtime
Children ages 3 and up can explore sensory play in a relaxing, supportive environment designed for neurodivergent children and children of all abilities. It’s an opportunity to play, discover and socialize without the expectations or stimulation that can sometimes come with traditional play environments.

Adaptive Storytime with BrightStart
Presented by the Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired, this inclusive storytime welcomes children and families of all abilities and developmental levels. Interactive books, activities and sensory-friendly toys create multiple ways for children to engage with the story—and with their community.

Sensory Sensitive Storytime
Designed for children with sensory processing differences, this storytime offers a more relaxed alternative to traditional Family Storytime. Expect low lighting, softer music, fewer stories and more opportunities for interactive play. Children of all abilities are welcome.

Read to a Pet
Sometimes the best audience is one with four paws! During Read to a Pet, children can practice their reading skills with registered therapy pets in individual 10-minute sessions. These gentle, supportive interactions can help children build confidence and feel more comfortable reading aloud.

Inclusive programming isn't just about creating a different version of an existing Library program. It's about recognizing that children experience the world in different ways and making sure everyone has a place to participate.

For some families, these programs can mean a child gets to enjoy storytime without becoming overwhelmed. For others, it may be a chance to practice a new skill, meet other families, or feel comfortable being themselves in a public space.
