So, have you completely binge-watched the third season of Stranger Things yet? It is hard to believe that it has been nearly two years since we last visited the residents of Hawkins, Indiana, and it looks like things haven’t changed much. Sure, the kids have all sprouted up, but the otherworldly menaces they must battle are back. And something else is back too—that great ’80s nostalgia, including the music and movies.

Let’s start with the music. One of the things that has stood out to so many viewers is Stranger Things’ amazing soundtrack. Not only does it bring back many memories for us Gen-Xers, it has also drawn in a whole new generation of music fans who are discovering these songs for the very first time. I love the cross-generational appeal of pop music! No matter what decade you are from, you can always find something fresh from another generation.

If you love the soundtrack to Stranger Things as much as I do, you can listen to it for free through MCPL! Not only can you check out the CDs, but you can also listen to the music through our free online streaming music service, Freegal. By logging into the MCPL website with your Access Pass (Library card), you can use Freegal to stream the albums and download and keep up to five songs each week. For free! You’ll also find more music from the artists featured, as well as many others from that decade.

And great music isn’t the only thing available through Freegal. You can also download music videos. I mean, let’s be honest; the best way to experience the music of that time period is through the music video format. How many countless hours did we ’80s children spend dancing in front of the television watching video after video on MTV?

Then you have the movies. If you have ever watched Stranger Things, you know that it is a direct homage to all the wonderful films of the 1980s—E.T., The Goonies, Ghostbusters. There are both obvious and subtle nods to them all. One of the things that makes the show so much fun is catching all the pop culture references. How many of us made the connection between Eleven flipping the van and E.T. taking all the kids on that magical bike ride?

Well, if you want to relive those movies, or see them for the first time, MCPL is also the place to go. Our DVD and Blu-ray selections are extensive, and you are guaranteed to find a plethora of those films referenced in Stranger Things. I must admit, I especially love the idea of young fans of the show seeing many of the classics that I grew up with for the first time. And why stop with movies? We also have a lot of classic television from the 1980s, including comedies like Growing Pains and soapy dramas like Dallas.

We have some great movies available online as well. Through another of MCPL’s online resources, OverDrive Video, you can find titles like the devilishly delicious Heathers, starring the one and only Winona Ryder! Or how about the absolutely silly Girls Just Wanna Have Fun based on the classic song by Cyndi Lauper and starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt? You’ll even find the original 1986 animated Transformers Movie.

So why not celebrate the return of everyone’s current favorite show with a trip down memory lane?
