Banned Books Week: eAudio Style!

banned books week

Banned Books Week, the annual celebration of the freedom to read during which readers worldwide read books and other works of literature that have been banned or challenged by governments, schools, religious groups, etc., starts on September 22 and runs through September 28.

There are tons of banned book lists that are a simple internet search away, but if you’re curious about some of the most popular banned/challenged books by year, check out this list: Top Ten Most Challenged Books, or if you are curious about the types of books most frequently banned/challenged, check out some of the lists here: Frequently Challenged Books.

If you want to get in on the action this year but don’t feel like you’ve got the time to sit and read, maybe try out one of the thousands of eAudiobooks the Library has to offer through OverDrive and RBdigital Audiobooks. You can access both services through your internet browser or an app on your tablet or mobile device (both Apple and Android). The apps are available through your device’s app store and all work similarly to the websites. If you are looking for a more streamlined experience, you could also try the Libby, by OverDrive mobile app for Apple and Android devices.

Here are some step-by-step instructions for using each platform:

OverDrive eAudiobooks

  • Using the browser of your choice, navigate to mymcpl.org/go-digital and scroll down to the eAudiobooks section.
  • Click on OverDrive Digital Downloads. You are taken to the OverDrive homepage. From here, you can log in to your account by clicking Sign in on the right side of the page. Type in your Access Pass (Library card number) and click Enter.
  • Once logged in, you can search for titles. There are two ways to search for eAudiobooks:
    • Click Collections on the left side of the toolbar.
    • Locate Audiobooks in the dropdown (on the right) and select See all from the bottom of the list. From here, you can scroll through our collection of audiobooks!

-OR-

    • On the main page, click Search (on the right side of the page). Type in your search and press Enter. You can search by keywords, titles, authors, etc.
    • Once the search has run, filters appear on the left side of the page. Click on the Audiobooks dropdown and select any audiobook types that you can use (typically MP3 audiobook and OverDrive Listen audiobook).
  • If you find a book you wish to listen to, click Borrow twice and select how you wish to listen: either Download MP3 audiobook or Listen now in browser. To download, you will need to have the OverDrive Windows app or mobile app.

RBdigital Audiobooks:

  • Using the browser of your choice, navigate to mymcpl.org/go-digital and scroll down to the eAudiobook section.
  • Click on RBdigital Audiobooks. You are taken to the RBdigital Audiobooks homepage. From here, you can log in by clicking Log in in the top right corner. If you have not already created an RBdigital account, you will need to click Register to set up an account.
    • To create an account, you will need to enter your information, Access Pass (Library card number), and Library PIN (usually your eight-digit birthdate) and create a username and password.
  • Once you are logged in, you can search for your next title a couple different ways:
    • You can click Search (magnifying glass icon) in the top right and search for the books you are interested in by title, author, keywords, etc.

-OR-

    • From the main page, you can select Explore on the right side of the page and then click either:
      • View By Genre to search available audiobooks by your chosen genre.
      • Or View All to see the entire collection of available audiobooks.
  • If you find an audiobook you wish to listen to, click on the book you want and then click CHECKOUT. To listen to the book on your computer, click PLAY NOW.
    •  If you wish to listen in your car, you will need to download the RBdigital app.

eAudiobooks with Libby:

  • To download the mobile app, search for “Libby, by OverDrive” in your device’s app store.
  • Once the app is downloaded, follow the steps to connect your Access Pass (Library card) to the app.
    • When searching for Mid-Continent Public Library, it will most likely “find” the Raytown Branch. This is correct even if your normal branch is elsewhere.
  • Once you are logged in, tap on Preferences in the middle left. Tap next to Format (on the word Any) and select Audiobooks from the dropdown menu. Tap Apply Preferences.
  • With your audiobook preference in place, you can search for eAudiobooks by tapping Search For A Book… at the top of the screen and perform a keyword, author, or title search.

-OR-

  • You can tap Explore in the middle right and search for books through a variety of categories like “Guide: Teens,” “What’s New,” or “Spotlights.”
  • Once you have found a book you want to listen to:
    • Tap the three-dot menu on the right and then tap Borrow twice.
      • You can listen immediately by tapping Open Audiobook.
  • Audiobooks you borrow with Libby and OverDrive are accessible through both programs!

We know these apps and websites can be a little tough to navigate sometimes, so if you would like some additional help, feel free to stop by any of our branches or come to a Tech Talk at a branch near you! If you would like to learn more about our eAudiobooks and other digital books, movies, and music, consider registering for a Free Movies, Music, and More! program or Accessing eBooks with OverDrive program!

Happy listening, Banned Books Week readers!
