Available by scholarship through a partnership among Literacy KC, Kansas City Public Library, and Mid-Continent Public Library, Career Online High School offers area adults (ages 19 and older) the opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and gain real-world career training through a self-paced, supportive, online program. Unique to the COHS program, students also navigate a career track designed to teach the skills needed to advance in certain job fields or pursue further school/training. In addition to a high school diploma, graduates can earn a certificate in one of the following areas:
- Certified Protection Officer
- Child Care and Education
- Commercial Driving
- Food and Hospitality
- General Career Preparation
- Home Care Professional
- Homeland Security
- Hospitality and Leisure
- Office Management
- Retail Customer Service
There are three steps to get started with Career Online High School:
- Complete the online readiness survey. Tell us about yourself and what motivates you to earn your high school diploma.
- Enroll in and complete an online two-week prerequisite course. If eligible, you will receive an email with instructions on how to enroll in a prerequisite course in your choice of 10 possible career majors.
- This is an opportunity for you to determine if this instructor-supported, self-paced approach to learning (expect to devote at least 8-10 hours each week to coursework) is the best fit for your educational needs, or if alternate options for high school completion are more appropriate.
- Note: The prerequisite course must be completed within two weeks of enrollment with a score of 70% or higher. However, it can be taken again, and there is no waiting period required between attempts.

Prospective students who have successfully completed the prerequisite class will be contacted to schedule an interview with Library and Literacy KC staff for scholarship consideration.
