7 Ways to Celebrate the Season at the Library

As the leaves turn and the air becomes crisp, the holiday spirit becomes palpable around the Kansas City metro. The Plaza brightens with twinkling lights and the bustle of shoppers. The fountains freeze in a magical display of icicles. Every family has their own set of traditions surrounding this time of year, and as a hub of community engagement, Mid-Continent Public Library has become embedded in many.

Here are just a few ways MCPL can help you celebrate the season:

  1. Download holiday music for free through Freegal Music.

Need some holiday tunes to get you in the spirit as you decorate your house? Find all your favorites from Johnny Mathis to John Legend on Freegal Music, which allows you to stream or download and keep up to five songs a week! If an old-fashioned CD is more your speed, you’ll find plenty in the MCPL catalog, which you can request and check out from your local branch.

  2. Research holiday gifts before you buy with Consumer Reports.

Use Consumer Reports through the Library’s website to research and compare products as you consider making a big purchase for your loved one. This trusted online resource offers reliable reviews on everything from appliances and new cars to luggage and toothbrushes!

  3. Learn how to make a low-cost (yet heartfelt) gift alternative through Universal Class.

Turn your own home into Santa’s workshop! Learn how to make a wide range of gifts—from homemade soaps and candles to paintings and calligraphy—through the Arts, Crafts, & Hobbies courses. For instruction on DIY gifts this holiday season, Universal Class can help!

  4. Download eMagazines from Flipster and RBdigital for holiday decorating and cooking tips.

Access the latest issues of today’s hottest food magazines so you can fix a feast that will impress your guests! Through Flipster and RBdigital Magazines, you can get all the best recipes from the experts at Bon Appétit, Food Network Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, and more.

  5. Check out classic (and not-so-classic!) holiday films to watch at home.

Find classic holiday films like It’s a Wonderful Life on DVD to check out from your local MCPL branch. More of a Die Hard fan? Don’t fret; MCPL has you covered. Check the catalog to see all of the movies in the Library’s collection. Some films are also available to stream through OverDrive Video.

  6. Enjoy a free program at the Library.

The Library’s long list of free holiday programs provides families and individuals of all ages an opportunity to enjoy some holiday cheer. It also includes seasonal favorites like Night Before Christmas Carol, the Dickens Carolers, and Storytime with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

  7. Purchase a Library Lovers membership for someone on your gift list.

If you’re still searching for a unique gift for the book lover in your life, consider a Library Lovers membership! An MCPL Library Lovers membership offers special swag, members-only events, and the satisfaction of supporting your local library. See the different levels, and purchase a membership at
