MCPL welcomes feedback from the community. As a taxpayer and library cardholder, you are entitled to share any concerns you may have about specific items, displays, or programs. The steps below explain how to begin the formal reconsideration process.
The Library has specific procedures for requesting a formal review of a item, display, or program. These procedures ensure requests are evaluated in an objective and timely manner. Each eligible request is evaluated by a staff committee using objective criteria with a written decision provided after the review is complete.
How do I request a formal review of a collection material, display, or program?
MCPL cardholders in good standing residing within the district may submit a Reconsideration Request Form to the Library. The form must be fully completed and based on the requestor’s own review of the item, display, or program in its entirety.
Please refer to the Reconsideration Request Form (PDF, 163KB) for full instructions on completing and submitting the form to the Library.
The Library may decline requests that are incomplete, anonymous, or use substantially identical language submitted by multiple individuals.
How does the Library evaluate Reconsideration Requests?
Once a completed form is received, a staff committee evaluates the material as a whole using objective criteria, including but not limited to:
- Alignment with MCPL’s mission and Collection Development Policy.
- Intended audience and age guidance from publishers and professional reviews.
- Developmental suitability for the intended audience.
- Presence and degree of sexually explicit or instructional sexual content.
- Educational, literary, artistic, or informational merit.
- Community relevance and balance within the overall collection.
- Standard library classification and placement practices.
- Placement that maintains access while supporting age‑appropriate shelving.
How long does the reconsideration process take?
The committee reviews eligible requests in a timely manner. Final decisions are sent in writing and may take a minimum of 30 days.
