Fascinating Facts

Q.  Where can you sail through a desert?

A.  When ships use the Suez Canal to travel between the Mediterranean and Red Sea, the dry desert lands of Egypt lies on either bank.

When a canal was first suggested, critics said the hot sun would dry up the water. The Suez Canal was opened in 1869, shortening the sea route between Britain and India by almost 6,200 miles. The canal is about 110 miles long, around 740 ft. wide at the surface (it gets narrower as it nears the bottom), and 70 ft. deep.
