Story Sprint Flash Fiction Writing Contest

Flash FictionWhat is flash fiction? Well, it’s short – really short, and you quite literally write it in a flash.

For this contest the theme will be: myths or fairytales retold. All submissions must be original adaptations, 500 to 1000 words in length, and submitted by Friday, September 25th 2015, 11:59 p.m. CST.

Our judges will be from local arts groups. They will be looking for the best short narrative. The top three submissions will be featured on the, and excerpts will be posted to social media. The first place story’s author will receive a bag of Library Lover’s coffee, a Story Center coffee tumbler, and a much-coveted seat in the fully-booked Gillian Flynn author visit on October 3rd at 11:00 a.m. This contest is open to teens and adults.

By entering the Story Center flash fiction contest, Story Sprint, an author agrees to the following rules:

  • Word Count: 500 -1,000 words
  • Deadline: Friday, September 25th 2015, 11:59 p.m. (CST)
  • Total Entries are limited to one per person. Sorry, that is per person, not per pen name.
  • Submit entries to: with a subject line of “Story Sprint” or use the form below.
  • Format: Story must be in Times New Roman or Verdana, 12-point text, double-spaced, in black with no art, graphics or tables
  • Each story must have title; title word count is not included in total word count

We also need the author’s information. Please include the following information at the bottom of the entry:

  • Title
  • Author’s name (or pen name)
  • E-mail address and telephone number

Winners will be notified by September 30th by email. The first prize of a spot to see Gillian Flynn is for one, and is transferable.
