Ever want to just sit by the pool and linger over a tall glass of iced tea and a good book? Or, what about taking the boat out on the lake and needing a little something to read? What to do? You don't want to take that lovely hardback book from the library with you. What if the kids get out of the pool for that snack they just have to have and drip all over your book? That's not good. Well, we have a solution for you. We have non-barcoded paperbacks you can choose to take with you to the pool or on that boat.
On Sunday, the MCPL Weston Branch had the opportunity to join forces with other volunteers to support Weston's Park & Recreations during Kids' Day. We had a booth set up that featured miniature golf and prizes. Two popular booths were the petting zoo and the inflated water slide. As it was pretty hot on Sunday, the water slide had the longest line, but our mini golf didn't do too badly either. We had 65 kids come by to swing a club. No one suffered any injuries. I was hit a few times with the golf balls, but they were plastic and it didn't hurt too much.
Here at the Weston Branch, we have had a few people on vacation. One staff member journeyed to Colorado. While I don't think she did any rock climbing while she was there, she could have and this book would have been perfect: Best Climbs Denver and Boulder.
According to the calendar, it has been spring for over a month now. But, I have had my doubts. Except for the occasional times when the temperatures have just nipped at 70, it has been unseasonably cool and just too darn wet for what I consider a "real" spring.
Too busy to get down to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum? Never fear, the library, once again, is here! We are very lucky to be displaying paintings created by students of West Platte High School. Seascapes, landscapes, snowscapes…we feature them all. Come in and browse our gallery.
The week of April 18, 2011 is Turn Off Your Television Week. A study shows that most American kids spend 1,680 minutes per week watching television. We watch TV during breakfast, and we watch TV during supper. These used to be the best times of the day to talk to our family, to exchange information, and to have meaningful conversations. And let’s face it, as a librarian, I would like to encourage you to go to your local library and check out books too.
The Easter Bunny came to the Weston Branch early this year. When asked why he didn't wait until closer to Easter the bunny replied, "Well, the weather was great today, the lawn people hadn't mowed yet, and the grass was perfect for hiding eggs. Also, I heard that the Weston Branch, along with the rest of the MCPL branches, would be closed on Wednesday April 20th, so I figured this was just the best time for Egg Hunt 2011." The kids from storytime found all of the eggs and were sent home hyped up on sugar and nice weather.
Almost all of us here have pets. Most of us have dogs. There are a couple with cats and dogs, and one of us recently added a snake to their menagerie. That being said, we love them and shower them with treats and toys. And much to their chagrin, I am sure, we take them to the vet when they need medical attention. This week we have the unique opportunity to make cat toys and a rag chew toy for our dogs. Why don't you join us?
I was reading blogs from other branches yesterday and came across one blog featuring a video of a round-headed kitten playing. What, do you ask, could be more cute than a bouncing ball of meowing fluff? Try a baby wallaby in a backpack, a gang of mini-nubian goat babies, or my favorite, an infant two-toed sloth. All of these baby animals and more can be found on my favorite website ZooBorns. I love this site and visit it every day. I even have their free app on my iPhone.
Both of my sons are graduating in May. My oldest is graduating from law school at UMKC and my youngest from the University of Missouri in Columbia. While I have adjusted to life without the pitter patter of big feet these last few years, many of you may be facing an empty nest for the first time. There are several books in our system on the subject, but the book with the best title is My Nest Isn't Empty,
