As I embark upon a new career path here at the Riverside Branch, I am excited and a bit nervous. No matter how old I get, some experiences still give me butterflies in my stomach, the same way they did when I was little. Starting a new job? It is the same as starting kindergarten. All these new people to meet. I hope they like me. I hope I don’t say something stupid. Why can’t I just stay home all day, watch cartoons, eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and drink Kool-Aid?
Although I've been blogging a lot recently about favorite music, I rarely, if ever, listen to contemporary music. I listen to NPR in the car and at home all day, so there is not a lot of music going on in my life. Maybe that's why all of my favorites trends come from the late 60s and early 70s.
The 2013 Pulitzer Prize for fiction was announced recently; it was The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson. It is a novel telling the story of growing up in a North Korean orphanage and the protagonist’s life after leaving the orphanage. I’ve got it checked out, but it’s still on my to-read list.
For you fellow foodies out there, we have another fun program coming up! I’m always looking for creative meal strategies, preferably something quick that can be prepared after work. I’m also a frugal foodie, striving to stretch my food budget every month. Well, next Monday night I’d like to share with you some of my favorite go-to recipes.
If you don’t have any youngsters at home, you may not have noticed one of our newest additions to our library services. MCPL has received grants for an Early Literacy Station (ELS) at each of our branches. It looks like one of our ordinary computers offered for use to our customers, but this computer is NOT connected to the Internet. So, it is extremely safe and secure for our youngest library customers.
My husband and I were a little late getting on the Mad Men bandwagon. I’d heard all of the buzz, but we missed viewing the early episodes. And, it was a little difficult getting interested in the characters when we missed their backstory. After listening to one of my co-workers rave about Mad Men, I decided to give season one a try.
Our regular Riverside Branch customers may notice a few changes the next time you visit us. We are reconfiguring our circulation desk in order to improve customer service and increase efficiency. To that end, our circulation desk has totally disappeared! Never fear, we are still available at a temporary desk in order to serve our customers.
If you’ve read a few of my blogs, you may have noticed that I can be a little frugal. Over the past few years, I’ve come to appreciate thrift stores, ferreting out the best happy hours in town, and discovering the joys of upcycling on Pinterest. Well, there is an upcoming program at the Riverside Branch that’s right up my alley.
Last night, while my husband and I were sitting in our favorite Zona Rosa BBQ joint, the discussion turned to music. Hubby asked about the results of my two Beatles surveys; I tallied the results as soon as I got to the Library today.
We’ve got a new display at the Riverside Branch that is generating a lot of interest – Blind Date with a Book. It’s got a selection of books gift-wrapped, but you don’t find out what’s inside until after you’ve checked it out! It was a lot of fun putting it together, so please stop by for a blind date.
