As you’ve heard, the Raytown Branch has added several genre displays to our library shelves. I’m on our Fantasy display team and often read new and interesting books in the genre.
I love the smell of bread baking. It reminds me of my Grandmother and the lessons she gave me in the fine art of sourdough. These days, I have trouble fitting bread baking into my schedule. But not anymore! Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day by Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois has changed all that!
The Raytown Branch Adult Book Group will be reading Love You More by Lisa Gardner for their June meetings. Tess Leona, a state police trooper, claims to have shot her husband in self-defense. But where is their 6 year old daughter?
The Raytown Branch Adult Book Group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and the third Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Our groups usually last from 60 to 90 minutes.
We have plenty of copies of the book and audiobooks for you available at our checkout desk.
I was curious about a new kind of program scheduled at MCPL—a walking tour. So I joined in and met Dr. Miriani and the tour group at the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain on the Plaza. I’ve been the Plaza many times through the years, but I’ve never really learned the detailed history and how the experiences of one person had such a great influence on the architecture and layout of this delightful part of Kansas City.
There’s nothing like a mouthwatering barbecue sandwich drenched with spiced up sauce. I’m very fortunate that I live in one of the famous barbecue cities in the nation. I do enjoy most of the franchised barbecue restaurants in Kansas City, but I also like exploring other local barbecue vendors.
Having worked in a public library for many years, I cannot begin to tell you how often I hear the comment, "I bet you read everything," or "what do you like to read?" Often, I feel people are disappointed with my answer. You see, I consider myself a reader, I’m just not a big fiction reader. I am a big newspaper and magazine reader.
Most people are either cat people or dog people. Personally, I am a cat person. I'm not sure why, because when I was growing up, we had dogs at my house. I really don't remember the first dog because I was very young when we had her. I do remember, as a child, being somewhat afraid of dogs, especially big dogs. To this day I still do not like dogs who jump on me or lick me. When I was about ten years old, my sister found a stray dog and brought it home. The dog was pregnant at the time. After she had her puppies, we kept the mother dog and the runt of the litter.
Mother's Day is just around the corner on May 13, 2012. Just a little reminder for everyone if you are lucky enough to have your mom in your life.
Just how important are mothers?
I know my mother taught me compassion. I remember putting food baskets together for those less fortunate. She was always a giver. It's always better to give than receive.
She taught me a good work ethic. She rarely missed a day of work. She taught me to try my best to do a good job on whatever I was working on.
I have met an incredible person who runs Erin’s Midwest Animal Rescue. This is a foster based organization. She got me thinking about my three dogs that I currently own. All of them were rescued either from a friend, the street, or an animal shelter. These dogs have enhanced my life in so many ways.
