The Kid, the Girl, and the Puppy

This was the summer of the puppy. I told my kids I was going to adopt a new family member once they both were off to their various institutions of higher learning in the fall, and they said, "GET ONE NOW!" But why now? We won’t be able to go on vacation if we get a puppy. The whole summer will be all about the puppy. Both the Kid and the Girl protested- If you get a puppy after we leave, it won’t know us. And, they reasoned, if you get a puppy now, you’ll have two extra people with flexible schedules to help you care for it and potty train it. Yeah, right, I thought.

What's Your Reading Score?

My children's school has just started the Book It! program again. It’s a program we’ve done before. You or your kindergartener reads 20 books (per month), or your reading age children tackle so many pages per month. The difference this time, however, is that my son’s teacher handed me a questionnaire.

What? Am I being graded now?!!!

Yes, it turns out we all are...by our children.

"Crazy Cat Stuff"

Around the Platte City Branch, we are very pro-pet. Bring your dog to our drive through window, and we’ll give them a dog biscuit. Bring your cat through and we might look at you funny……and then give you a dog biscuit. If your cat is anything like the Felis Silvestris Catus, which we all seem to own, they’ll eat it regardless.

Seriously, our cats are weird.

Writing a Blog is Hard

You may not think that librarians have it rough, and as a general rule, that’s true. It’s indoor work, no heavy lifting; admittedly, it’s a pretty sweet gig.

But as with any career, we too endure our fair share of hurdles. The hardships in our workday likely pale in comparison to those in other careers, but nevertheless we have them.

Who Do You Think You Are? Library Edition

Who do you come from? Not where, but who?

I’ve always believed that if you don’t know the past, you are doomed to repeat it. And, you should especially know your own roots. As such, I have been researching my ancestry for years, and I am still amazed at the things I find.

The Caped Crusader's Hidden Secrets

As a huge Batman fan, I have been eagerly awaiting the newest film in the franchise. I consider Christopher Nolan’s films (Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises) to be the best made about the Caped Crusader.
