Please Excuse Our Mess!

This week Mid-Continent Public Library joined the Platte County Community Center in celebrating the groundbreaking of the expansion of the YMCA in Platte City.  This event marks the beginning of several months of work that will eventually result in a bigger, better equipped YMCA building, as well as an expanded parking lot that will be shared between the YMCA and the Platte City Branch.

More Crazy Cat Antics

Because I have no children, I’ve adopted two cats as my very own. As such, I treat them as most people would treat their children; they’re both spoiled rotten and get away with murder. Recently, however, one of my four-legged children has been giving me problems. Make that litter box problems.

Without being too graphic, just imagine that my kitty was having some accidents on the carpet. I scrubbed and scrubbed, changed litter, everything I could think of to alleviate the problem. But nothing seemed to work.

What If I Can’t Find It at My Library?

One of the great things about the MCPL system is the ability to get almost any item you might be trying to find. With over thirty branches, the Library has almost anything you could want. But every once in a while, there might be something that <gasp> our Library doesn’t own.

America’s Game

Hall of Fame second baseman Rogers Hornsby said, "People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." The Super Bowl is now history and March Madness has not begun, but pitchers and catchers have reported to their respective spring training sites in Florida and Arizona. The rest of the players will be reporting soon to prepare for the upcoming season, with rookies trying desperately to make an impact during this period to make it to the "Big Show."

New Home, New Headaches

My husband and I have been apartment living since we got married over five years ago. We believed that we would be apartment dwellers forever. A pool, gym, maintenance with a simple phone call…what could be better? However, in the past several months as we watched interest rates and house prices drop, we opened our mind to buying a house.

The Nominations Are in…

You might have heard that our branch fish, Bookley, took a trip to Florida for the winter. He enjoyed his time there so much that he decided to retire in style. This means that our branch has a new friend; however, we haven’t had any luck deciding on a name!

We’ve narrowed it down to six options, and we’re leaving the decision up to you. Could he be a Finn? Or a Finnegan? How about Fizz? Any one of these could be the winner. Stop by the Platte City Branch to vote for our fish’s first name.

Grecian Delights

One of my all-time favorite movie lines is "I am Spartacus" from the movie Spartacus starring Kirk Douglas. The movie depicts an army of former Roman slaves led by Spartacus in battle with legions of the Roman army.

It’s Award Season Again!

For film lovers, the months between January and March mean one thing: award season. This is the time when stars don their Versace gowns and Armani suits to entertain the world with their excess. The exciting part of this year’s awards, however, is that several of the frontrunners are based on books. Lincoln, Les Miserables, and Silver Linings Playbook were all novels before they traveled to the big screen.

Oh, the Weather Outside is Frightful...

I hate snow.

I confess. I do not believe in a white Christmas. I can live with 70 degrees and sunny every day of the year. However, living in the Midwest doesn’t really make that possible. The recent warm weather gave me hope for the winter…perhaps it would be unseasonably warm with no possibility of inclement conditions.
