Parkville/Boardwalk/Riverside Teen Advisory Group Participates in World Book Night
Members of the Teen Advisory Group for the Parkville, Boardwalk, and Riverside branches met on Tuesday night, April 23rd to deliver over 100 books to the St. Luke's North Hospital locations at Barry Road and Smithville; the books were then distributed by staff to teens who have long-term stays at either hospital. This Teen Advisory Group is made up of 17 teenagers, ages 13-18, who are homeschoolers and public schoolers in the Park Hill, Platte County, and Smithville school district areas.
I never would have thought I’d ever have anything happen to me before. I’m sure that’s really cliché, but I really, truly never thought about it before I went off to college.
Let me set the scene, it was late one night after I’d gotten off the bus from my astronomy lab, which was out in the middle of nowhere. I was back on campus, and the campus lights were on out in the streets, but no one else was near the front of the science building. I went to go get my bike. I thought I was alone.
Have you ever had that guttural, "oh no…" feeling when you realize that big paper you were assigned at the beginning of the year will be due in the next week or so, and you haven’t really done much?
We’ve all been there, me more so than I’d like to admit. We all get busy in our lives, caught up in daily activities like friends, family, video games, soccer, disc golf, and the like.
Actually, I had this happen last week! I had to write a 6-8 page paper for my ethical theory class, and I had no clue where to begin. I had a really hard time getting started.
Like most of you out there, I am very excited that "Spring has finally Sprung," as they say (or maybe normal people don’t say that, just my crazy family, I’m not sure). However, while I am very excited about the change of seasons and the warmer weather that is hopefully here to stay, I am also embarrassed to admit that we are already four months into 2013 and my New Year’s resolution to get in better shape has been abandoned, just like so many years before.
What’s in a color? What does it mean? To you? To me? To Tim 50 miles east? How about to Kyle 1,000 miles West?
We don’t go red or orange; we don’t get yellow or sky blue. But, we can go green. It’s interesting that green seems to be a destination, a place we can go.
Believe it or not, MCPL is a great place to go for information about the Kansas City metro area. If you are interested in becoming acquainted with some of our local venues, we have several ways to provide access to the communities you are curious about.
Did you know that your Library has just what you are looking for? Rockabye Baby music and Hushabye Baby tunes are great lullaby helpers with an adult kicker.
The Art Forger, by B. A. Shapiro, has received some great reviews. I totally agree. It is loosely based around an actual event. On March 18, 1990, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts was robbed by thieves disguised as police officers. Thirteen paintings, including masterpieces by Manet, Rembrandt, and Vermeer, were stolen.
That combination of four letters can strike fear into anyone’s heart these days, especially since it drags with it a whole bunch of hard questions. Who should I ask? What should I wear? Will she say yes? These are just a few of the conundrums we find ourselves in at this time of the year.
I think about this often. It’s a plastic card 3.25 inches long by 2 inches tall. One side reveals a sleek 3D image depicting your access to information, resources, entertainment, programs, and, really, your world. On the back is a barcode with string of 14 numbers that makes the card account unique to an individual—whether adult or child.
