Everyone knows that the hotter, longer days of summer are brought about by the sun. During the summertime, the Northern Hemisphere of the Earth is the closest to the sun that it will be all year, bringing the seasonal change. However, the sun does far more than just cause seasons to change. The sun’s energy provides us with solar power, as well as providing a necessary catalyst for plants to grow. Solar flares cause the Northern Lights, and the sun’s rays can be diffused to make rainbows. Yeah, the sun does countless things for the Earth – no question about that.
We're winding down Oak Grove storytimes for the summer. Our last ones are May 22nd and May 23rd. Storytime will resume September 4th. While we won't have storytime during the summer, there is still plenty of fun to be had. Our Summer Reading Program begins May 21st and will continue until July 31st. During this time, we have scheduled many fun programs and activities. Go to our Events Page to take a look and register for programs.
A good book has to do something to be likeable. If it is just about describing the same people doing the same things every day without a conflict, then it can get pretty boring. There are plenty of books that provide entertaining storylines and characters that the reader can really get into. There’s no point in arguing that; there are plenty of goods books out there. However, the barrier between a good book and a great book is a hurdle that few authors manage to climb over.
As a Star Trek fanatic, I knew about the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMO-RPG) Star Trek Online well before it came out in 2009. I was excited because it allows players to command their own ship and progress in rank, all while playing in a universe true to the franchise. However, it had one hitch upon release.
The theme for Oak Grove’s spring bulletin board is "Read Between the Lines." It’s all about how every story is full of little things that surprise you and how a thousand tiny details come together to make the big picture. At first glance, the image appears to be that of a dragon wrapped around a castle and holding a frightened princess captive, with a knight on his trusty steed coming to the rescue. However, upon closer inspection, you can see that the picture actually consists of many words and phrases from different fairytale stories, all placed over book pages.
The Oak Grove Branch will be closed on March 30th and 31st. During this time, the library will be repainted. The branch will reopen Monday, April 2nd at 9:00 a.m.
For services, please visit the Grain Valley Branch while we are temporarily closed on Friday and Saturday. However, our branch's book drop will remain open 24/7 for returns.
The staff at the Oak Grove Branch wishes to thank all fifty-five families that participated with us in the Read Aloud Family Time (RAFT) program this year. To those who completed the reading challenge, we hope you are enjoying your prize copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!
Recently, I have encountered a lot of questions about what makes a movie an "anime" movie. What exactly is anime, and how does it differ from just animated films?
What affect does your previous experience have on what you are doing now? Is it possible that what you expect from something shapes your reaction to what you receive? I think this is very much the case, and I’m not the only one. For instance, recently there was a report on NPR about the relationship between expectations and reactions, and what becomes of that when people purposely raise or lower them.
