In 1998, the iconic video game made by Valve Software, known as Half-Life, was released. In 2004, using an updated graphics engine known as the Source engine, Valve released Half-Life 2. At that time, fans of the original Half-Life decided to remake that video game, but with the graphically superior Source engine.
The crisp lines of ink just barely off the press, the soft mustiness of age-old pages—these things are my addiction. I like very few things more than a good story, both reading them and writing my own. I compose papers for my college courses, I write novels that I aspire to one day have published, and, yes, I also get paid to write blogs for MCPL. However, despite my love for it, sometimes I get a little blocked and have issues coming up with topics for my writings. I can’t count how many times in passing that I’ve voiced the question, "What should I write about?" as a rhetorical musing.
We are always hearing about other creatures on the planet that can do things better than a human. Dogs can smell so much better, owls can hear so much better, and eagles can see so much better. However, have you ever paused to consider why other animals doing things better than a human is so remarkable? It’s because humans themselves have an amazing capacity for things!
Here we are in the middle of a very hot summer, wishing for nothing more than for our air conditioning to wait until next month if it’s going to break. The world is in full bloom, and children are out and about, laughing in the long days of the year. Have you ever wondered about that, about why children have the summer off from school?
The lists below will take your name and turn it into a Western novel title. Take the first initial from your first name, middle name, and last name, and string the words together, adding phrases like "at" or "at the" as necessary for the title to make sense. For example, the initials ERA would equate to Vengeance at the Western Trail. And there you have it, your name turned into a title fitting for a western novel.
One of the greatest opportunities afforded to us by living in America is the chance to share in cultures from around the world. Different people come to America, bringing with them different aspects of their own culture. We can see it in their languages, their fashions, and their beliefs; but there is a distinct difference between seeing it and experiencing it. When it comes to experiencing a different culture, the best method is without a doubt to immerse one’s self in that part of the world.
Here we are at the end of the summer reading program, and what a blast it has been! Even though the program and the prizes are spoken for, don’t worry. We have plenty of fun things planned as school starts up again.
Storytime for the youngsters will start back up at Oak Grove on September 4th. Be sure to check out the Events page for adult programs that we have coming up.
Color is an integral part of our society. Just think of how many times a day you stop to consider color. You likely evaluate colors when you are putting on your clothes in the morning – after all, no one wants to be the oddball wearing neon pink polka dots and lime green plaid. Even on your daily drive to work, colors play a huge role in what you do. How you respond to a traffic light varies greatly depending on what color the traffic light is.
Being a joyful multiple of four, 2012 is the year for the summer Olympics. The running of the torch has already begun, and the start of the competition is less than a month away. We all know the excitement of watching athletes from all over the world compete to be named the best in their sport. This year there are 36 different sports listed on the schedule.
We study our culture through a myriad of different media: literature, sociology, and politics. However, one of the most interesting ways to learn about a culture is through a type of study referred to as ethnomusicology. This discipline is the study of culture through music. Already, when we think about generations and locations, we think of different styles of music here in the United States. For instance, we often relate blues and jazz to the states at the south end of the Mississippi River. The baby boomers bring rock and roll to mind.
