Do you have a New Year’s goal to get fit and lose weight? Or, like me, is it more like a fleeting notion that quickly gets tossed aside by MORE IMPORTANT THINGS? That’s how it’s been with me until yesterday, when I actually wrenched my back by side-tossing laundry into a basket. I mean, how much more incentive do I need?
In exploring the many databases offered in MCPL’s Online Resources, I found one that’s very useful and fun under Biography called Biography in Context.
This is such a cute song with great actions that help children with motor skills. However, have you ever stopped to tell your child what a "water spout" is? Or, better yet, have you taken them outside your home and showed them how rainwater drains?
Children can only learn the words that others share with them. It seems terribly obvious, I know, but how often do we take the time to explain unusual words to them?
When planning for our big event, Young@ Heart:Open House, I had a really large obstacle to overcome. The event focuses on free services offered by many Clay County organizations to those age 50 and up. The problem I ran into was the fact that many people this age and over do not like to be referred to as senior. I had to try to describe the event and get across to our customers that these services were for customers of a certain age. I did not realize before I worked on the first event we had last May how much of an issue this could be.
Have you been in the North Oak Branch recently and heard a lot of beeping? Or, wondered why the clerk was checking in your items twice? Well, North Oak is in the process of inventorying every item in the branch. You may find a clerk in any isle with a laptop wanding in every barcode. This will help us to know just what we have in our collection. We will also find items that may be on hold for a customers, or we may even find items that are no longer in our collection.
"Time spent with cats is never wasted." ~Sigmund Freud
He was named Sam in a fit of geekish glee for the character in the TV show Quantum Leap. We always said that if we got another cat, we could name him Al, for Sam’s best friend on the show. (There was a flaw in this plan, which became clear when our second cat came to us, and Al became Allie. But that’s another blog.)
Thanks to nearby Northgate Middle School of the North Kansas City School District, a large barren wall in the children’s area has turned into a beautiful art gallery. There are varied styles and mediums represented, including fingerprints using ink pad, half-face portraits in pencil, and frottage in oil pastels. Among the most striking pieces, however, are the Van Gogh inspired flowers in chalk and glue. The colors are vibrant and intense, drawing the viewer in to appreciate this world of color on a gray winter’s day.
When looking for ideas to use for my blog post, I often turn to the reliable source, Chase's Calendar of Events. This reference book has entries for each day of the year. Birthdays of famous people are included every day, and various events, anniversaries, and holiday are listed for every day. Some of the "special" days listed are quite obscure; they make you wonder about how much free time some people have on their hands.
After celebrating the New Year, most of us are trying to recover from the holidays. Here at the Library, I was trying to figure out what to write about for the blog today. I decided that instead of writing about one event, I would see what significant events happened today.
