At least that's what some would call it if the three major library systems in the KC area could establish a single cataloging system. Imagine being able to search AT ONE TIME the availability of books, audio, video (as well as eBooks) within our local library systems. That very idea has been on the minds of local libraries for some time now. This endeavor includes leaders at Kansas City Public Library, Johnson County Public Library, and our own Mid-Continent Public Library.
Last month, the Homeschoolers @ the Library group at the North Oak Branch had a Creative Writing Program. Creative writing is so important for kids. We worked hard to show that writing IS FUN. When you approach it as a chore, you have already set yourself up for failure.
The kids, ages 5-10, amazed us with their creative skills. Our writing contest was the final challenge that put their skills to the test. They had 7 minutes to write a fun story. Here are our winners!
One day last month, a co-worker and I both said that we would like to have at least a little snow this winter. It just hasn’t seemed like winter without any snow around.
Did you know the library keeps track of the number of customers who come to visit each day? Each time the door to the Library is opened our number is increased by one. At the end of the day, the total is divided by two since the door is opened twice by each visitor, once when they arrive and once when they leave. The number isn’t exact, of course, since sometime people arrive and leave as groups. It does, however, give us an approximate number of the people using the Library. Missing those verdant lawns of many months ago? Dreaming of all the green things you want to plant this spring? The color green is in short supply in the middle of February, but not to worry. The Pantone Color Institute, the world’s color authority, recently named Emerald Green as the 2013 Color of the Year. So don’t wait for those lawns and shrubs…green is everywhere right now -- in fashion, beauty, and interiors.
I wanted to write about something new and different this week for my blog post. My search for something unique turned up Burgsonndeg, an old tradition from Luxembourg. This word is used to designate the first Sunday during Lent, and it falls this year on February 17th. In Luxembourg, young people gather wood and build a huge bonfire on a hill to represent the victory of the sun over winter.
My husband and I have been looking into building a home. The first thing I wanted to do was find a floor plan I liked. We had some particular specifications including: one floor, small square footage, etc. As I was wandering the stacks one day, I discovered that the Library is the perfect place to start when looking to build a house.

According to the beloved movie Forrest Gump, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get." However, we all have those times when we bite into that yucky piece of chocolate…if this is one of those times for you, come visit the Library!
