My husband and I own a house that is over 100 years old. Needless to say, it needs a lot of updating and improvements. Because of this, one of our favorite channels to watch is HGTV. We get a lot of ideas on improving our home but little know-how. Like many homeowners, we don't have thousands lying around to pay someone to do our improvements, so we try to do things on our own with a little bit of help from others.
Growing up, having venison for dinner never occurred in my household. Common meals in my house were beef, chicken, and fish, so that is what I learned to cook. So it has been quite an experience for me being married to a hunter and having a freezer full of venison meat. I didn't know where to start. I didn't have any recipes for venison, and I knew I couldn't call and ask my mother for advice on preparing it since she's never cooked with it either.
After a recent visit to a Chinese restaurant, I was eager to open the crunchy cookie to find my "fortune." The words of wisdom that fell onto my lap were "Book lovers never go to bed alone." With the cold and raging winds of winter making a return (after a delightful little warm spell), many may be home sick in bed. And what better way to pass the time than to lose oneself in a good book?
I am addicted to the written word; I love to read. I also love the movies, and I am a music fiend. There is nary a movie that I see that doesn't make me want to look up the soundtrack as soon as I can to find a song that strikes my fancy. The same is true for a movie that is based on a book. Which movie inspired you to read the book?
Remember the 70s? Remember the 80s? How about the 780s?
I am talking about the "musician's paradise" that can be found at your local library--resources that are free to both the music lover and the musician, struggling or otherwise.
There is something new creeping around the Library at night, and it's not bookworms! Here at the North Independence Branch, the dinosaurs have come back! Made from recycled foam board, they would love to have you come check them out!
Are you stressed, tired, and in need of a getaway? Does One Hundred Years of Solitude sound like the perfect vacation? Then step back from your stress and pick up a copy of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's classic today. It may not qualify as a genuine vacation, but reading a good book can surely "take you away" from it all!
This is one of the services of Mid-Continent Public Library that many people may not know about, and I think it’s great! It’s for customers who can’t get to one of our branches because they can’t drive or have health problems, either permanent or temporary. They also have to live in the MCPL district, which covers most of Jackson, Clay, or Platte counties.
Come check out memorabilia from KC Nut & Bolt, Sheffield Steel, Armco Steel, Glauner Tractor, Bell Telephone, Katz Drug Store, Manor Bread Company, and more. The North Independence Branch is now showing items from these places. Along with these displays are gems and minerals from the Gem & Mineral Society; quilts from a local quilting group; and hats and shoes from all around the world presented by Cultural Crossroads. Artifacts from Drumm Farm are part of a permanent display in the case on the southwest wall.
