Birthday on the Moon Anyone?

I recently found the most adorable book that I look forward to reading to my grandchildren. The book is called Big Birthday by Kate Hosford.

Annabelle is planning a birthday party and has decided that the zoo is boring. As the story evolves, Annabelle is successful in getting her party on the moon.

Kid's Almanac

The 2013 Scholastic…Almanac for Kids is such a cool book packed with lots of great information. It contains several different sections that are loaded with useful facts, figures, stats, and lots of really neat pictures. This almanac is a good resource for homework help, as it contains interesting facts for a wide range of subjects.

This is a wonderful source for trivia buffs or a perfect reference for students. If your kid has questions, this book has lots of answers.

Hair for Mama is a story of a young boy whose mother has cancer. The family is preparing to take a family picture, and Marcus wants his mother to be happy, so he sets out to find her some hair. Even though the plan doesn’t work in quite the way he expects, he learns a very important lesson.

Freedom Writers Diary

Erin Gruwell had high expectations going into teaching her English class. Her idea of a perfect classroom, with everyone being accepting of everyone, was soon crumbling down around her. She intercepts a racial caricature circulated in her room and realizes she needs to begin a journey of acceptance and tolerance with her students.

MCPL & Early Literacy Fun at Clay County Public Health Center!

The Liberty Branch had a wonderful time presenting four Early Literacy Storytimes to more than 115 adults and children on April 16 at the Clay County Public Health Center. Early literacy information and free books were given to each attendee. Children and caregivers alike enjoyed bubbles, rhymes, songs, an interactive story, and parachute activities while learning how to "Have Fun with Books" and many other early literacy skills.

Teen Tech Week e-Reader Winners

This year's Teen Tech Week, which ran from March 10-16, gave teens the opportunity to check out all the technology that the Library offers. Everything from virtual learning to digital content was showcased this year. To coincide with this, the Liberty Branch had the opportunity to host a contest for teens. Two Kindle Simple Touch e-Readers were donated to our branch to give away.

Dr. Who

I have really enjoyed watching the Doctor Who video series produced by BBC television. This series is about a time traveling character called the Doctor. I will be honest, this is a sci-fi series, but it is fun. The Doctor travels back in time and has an encounter with William Shakespeare, and the next episode may take you to some unknown planet in the universe.

Unearthly

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand is a delightful read focusing on Nephilim, or as they prefer in this book, angel-blood. Clara learns she’s part angel, then she starts having visions, which is supposed to show her what her "purpose" is. After piecing together the visions with her mother, they decide to move to a new town. Clara’s trying to find her way among this new world and find herself in the midst of being told what and who she’s supposed to be.

Having a Ball

With three grandkids playing soccer this year, I decided I had better learn a little bit about the game. I found an easy book that really helped. Soccer by Mike Kennedy explains the history, rules, equipment, and positions of the games. It also contains a list of famous soccer players, as well as additional books and websites with more information.
