The Timely Adventures of Rachel Evans: Hunter Enters the Forest

It was all Hunter’s fault. That was Rachel’s opinion, and she was sticking with it. If her little brother had any decency, he wouldn’t be here, and she could go time-traveling. It had been almost a month since her she and best friend Leigh had gone back in time and dealt with the ghost of George Bernard Shaw. After that there had been a steady stream of work. Leigh’s schedule was a complete opposite. They barely had a chance to exchange hellos, let alone plan a trip.

The Return of Rachel Evans, Timely Adventurer

Ebeneezer Scrooge. Hank Morgan. Billy Pilgrim. Lazarus Long. Kyle Reese. James Cole. Sam Tyler. Sam Beckett. The Doctor. Desmond Hume. Hiro Nakamura. Marty McFly and Emmet Brown. Bill S. Preston, Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan. Rachel and Leigh. What do all these (fictional) people have in common? If you guessed "time travel," you're absolutely correct.

Get Unbored!

"Mom, Dad...I'm bored!" You've probably heard this before. Even in today's world of hyperconnectivity, video games, and toys galore, kids still get bored. In fact, I think that kids today are especially likely to get bored easily because they have become used to 24/7 input via television, the Internet, and smartphones. When I think back to my own childhood, I remember a great deal of making my own fun: building "forts"' in the woods, making parachutes from trash bags and string, and creating elaborate dioramas in the sandbox with plastic army men and/or dinosaurs*.

Places I Have Always Wanted to Go...World Edition

On a dreary afternoon like today, it is extremely difficult to stop the travel bug once I have let it free. So I won’t. I have explored much of Europe and have a good list started for visiting in the US, but I can’t stop there. No, now I am thinking globally. So here it is…my list.

Places I have always wanted to go…world edition.

Places I have Always Wanted to Go

My junior year of college, I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad. In five months, that I will cherish forever, I lived in England and traveled to Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Belgium, Scotland, Ireland, and the Netherlands. I saw the sights, walked through the history, spoke the language (usually very poorly), and ate the food (my favorite part, I’m a foodie). I returned home in a haze of happiness and memories.

Snowed In? Bored? Build a Snow Structure!

As I write this, the Kansas City area is facing a potentially major snowstorm. By the time you read this, you and your families may be snowed in. I expect to be, as my driveway drifts quite badly in heavy snow and wind and requires more than just a shovel to excavate my way to the street. So, what do you do with your time if work or school are called off and driving is best left to snow plow operators and emergency vehicles? Want to go outside and do something?

eBooks Won't Kill the Library Star

When I tell people that I work at a library, one frequent response I get is "Aren’t you worried that eBooks are going to kill libraries and put you out of a job?" The previous version of this question was "Aren’t you afraid the Internet is going to kill libraries and put you out of a job?" Well, the Internet has been around for 20 years and we’re still here. I don’t see eBooks being any different.

Endlessly Deep: The Internet Rabbit Hole

"In another moment down went Alice after it [the white rabbit], never once considering how in the world she was to get out again." –Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

The Importance of Book Titles, Part 4: Puntastic Titles and Manga Word Salads

This will be our last blog post looking at the art of effective book titling. There are so many other methods (Character Name And The Noun Phrase, The Revenge of the Sequel, etc.) that I will refer you to the wonderful world of TVTropes.org for an exhaustive look at titling. We will wrap things up with some titling methods specific to certain genres and media.
