The school year is over or almost over. Have you thought about what to do this summer to keep your kids occupied and stimulated? By the time mid-summer rolls around, kids are sick of playing in the yard, have been to the pool a million times, and are begging you to take them some place fun. In this economy, this can get expensive for some. Here is a list of free (or almost free) things to do this summer:
The Oak Grove Youth Rodeo Club is a not for profit organization dedicated to helping youth compete in the rodeo arena and the arena of life. It was formed in 1991 to support youth and their families in the sport of rodeo. They want to keep young people involved in an activity where drugs and alcohol are not allowed. You do not have to own or ride a horse, nor do you have to have kids to join or participate in the club. You don't have to be a resident of Oak Grove either, all are welcome.
Nora Roberts is one of my favorite and most dependable authors. I just recently finished her newest book The Witness. Oh my gosh, awesome book! Nora Roberts always has the best characters in her books, and she's done it again in this one.
Decorating with Thrift Store and Flea Market Finds
I have always liked going to flea markets, thrift stores, and garage sales. My whole house is full of items I have bought over the years. I especially like finding something and turning it into something else totally different.
In March, the Grain Valley Stitchers took up the challenge of the Jelly Roll 1600 quilt. The quilts went together quickly and easily. There were a couple of mechanical problems that were quickly remedied and the fun began. We have done some really fun stuff at our meetings and you should join us.
Come join us for a storytime in the park. Then enjoy the Storybook Trail sponsored by the Grain Valley Parks and Recreation. This will be held on April 18th at 10 a.m. at the Armstrong Park Gazebo in Grain Valley. This is a great event for all to enjoy.
During the Storybook Trail time frame, a fun story will be displayed along the trail. As you go along the trail, you can stop at each page to find out what happens next. Families are encouraged to get out and go read with Mother Nature.
Cesar Millan has been called the Dr. Phil for dogs. He trains people and rehabilitates dogs with his calm-assertive guidance. Cesar is often the last resort for clients confronting crises with their pets. He sometimes decides to bring extreme cases to his Dog Psychology Center for power of the pack training.
Have you heard the word? Bugs! They're coming to a location near you. Are you ready for the bugs? When we have had a mild winter, it is not uncommon for there to be more bugs than usual. MCPL has books that can help you control insects in an earth-safe way.
Teen Game Night at the Grain Valley Branch was a huge success. A great group of teens came out to play board games, eat snacks, and just hang out with each other. The success of this program was thanks in part to the wonderful teachers at the Grain Valley North Middle School, who helped promote the program to their classes.
We're looking forward to hosting another game night soon.
I have enjoyed reading the series of books by Alexander McCall Smith, The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency. So, I was excited to watch the DVD/television production. This time the filmed version is every bit as good as the book. Great casting follows the storyline well and leaves you with the same feeling of satisfaction.
