Edgerton, Missouri isn’t known for much. A small, quiet town located in the corner of Platte County, we are easily overlooked unless you are passing through….accidently. You may have heard of Harmer’s Café, which we are delighted to have back in business after a short hiatus. You may have heard of the Union Mill Opry, which we are sad to say is no longer running after many years of providing many people with great entertainment. But probably the most popular draw to our quaint little neck of the woods is Pioneer Days.
It’s time to start the North Platte Teen Book Clubs up again! We are going to have a lot of fun this year, and I think we have some great books to read.
If there are any North Platte R1 Jr. High or High School students who would like to join these book clubs, you need to speak to your school librarians and sign up. Hurry—I will be delivering our first book choice on Thursday, August 30th.
People say they hate the month of August. Call me crazy, but I love August. Yes, it’s hot, but it is also the light at the end of the tunnel for cooler days ahead. The water in the pool is too hot to swim in – but in just a few weeks, we get to close up that deep black hole that all of our money for the summer goes into! And yes, the kids are restless and driving you crazy – but most of them are headed back to school shortly, if not already there. Those dreaded television reruns will be over soon, and we will have new shows to look forward to watching.
One of my favorite television shows of all time is a show on CBS called Criminal Minds. It follows a group called the BAU (the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit) through crimes, as well as their personal lives. Alesha (my best friend, roommate, and fellow page) and I actually stumbled upon the show last fall during college. We were hooked after a few episodes.
August 6 was the 76th anniversary of the opening of the Games of the XI Olympiad (the 11th annual Olympics) held in Berlin, Germany. With everything that was happening that year (1936), the Olympics were a time of peace in what many called very stressful and dangerous times.
I recently had the opportunity to go to New York City with a friend for her graduation from college. We had an awesome time! We spent about two and a half days exploring the city. We mostly did the usual touristy stuff. We figured this could be our only chance to visit the Big Apple, so we better do as much as possible in a short time!
Early this spring, our family received a letter in the mail notifying us that the price of water was going to increase by 17%, effective immediately. With seven people in our family, we probably use a little more water than the average family for baths, laundry, and dishes, but it is our large garden that requires the most water of all.
Join the Missouri Department of Conservation and Missouri Western State University on Saturday, July 28th from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. for a FREE festival celebrating all things creepy and crawly!
Today is the birthday of Korean pop star Lee Tae-Min (Taemin). Generally, not many people I know would care about that, but as of a handful of months ago, my little sister introduced me to K-Pop. I found that I really enjoyed the music of a band called SHINee, of which Taemin is a part of.
Fireworks Bucks - or How I Went Broke for Summer Reading
My seven year-old likes to read, but not every day. I kept asking him to read for his first free book at the Library, but the progress was slow and my nagging was annoying us both. Boom! An idea exploded in my head. I would match his summer reading time with fireworks bucks, fifty cents for each minute he reads!
